Capillary dried blood spot (DBS) samples facilitate field-based collection without venipuncture. This pilot study aims to evaluate the viability of creatine (Cr) and creatinine (Crt) quantification using fresh capillary serum (Cr/Crt) and DBS samples (Cr/Crt), using Flow Injection Analysis Mass Spectrometry (FIA - MS). Nine Olympic Athletes provided a capillary blood sample to assess Cr/Crt and Cr/Crt quantified by FIA - MS. No difference between Crt (mean ± SD: 813.6 ± 102.4 μmol/L) and Crt (812.4 ± 108.1 mol/L) was observed with acceptable variance [SEM 88.7; CV 10.7%; ICC 0.57 (CI 95% 0.06 - 0.84)] and agreement [very strong (Spearman: = 0.77; < 0.01) or strong (Pearson: = 0.56; = 0.04); Bland Altman: lower (-193) and upper (+196) limits of agreement]. Cr (mean ± SD: 691.8 ± 165.2 mol/L) was significantly different to Cr (2911 ± 571.4 mol/L) with unacceptable variance [SEM 171.6; CV 27%; ICC 0.002 (CI 95% -0.02 - 0.07)] and 'weak' agreement [Spearman: = 0.21, = 0.47 and Pearson: = 0.06, = 0.84; Bland Altman lower (-3367) and upper (-1072) limits of agreement]. Crt quantification is viable using both Crt and Crt (but not for Cr and Cr/Cr), with the DBS tissue handling technique offering several methodological and practice facing advantages. Future work should expand upon the sample size, explore sport/discipline relevant analytes across a full competitive season, including key training, recovery and performance blocks of their periodized performance plan.

Background Sigma metrics, a cornerstone of quality control (QC) in manufacturing, have been increasingly adopted in analytical processes. In clinical biochemistry labs, Sigma analysis provides insights into the level of QC achieved and identifies deviations from perfection. Methods A prospective-retrospective observational study was conducted at the Central Diagnostic Laboratory of Shree Krishna Hospital between August 2021 and July 2022.

This study aimed to assess how ursolic acid (UA) can protect human skin keratinocytes from damage caused by ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation. Utilizing an omics-based approach, we characterized the features of photodamage and investigated the potential of UA to reverse HaCaT cell subpopulation injury caused by UVB radiation. The most significant changes in metabolite levels after UA treatment were in pathways associated with phosphatidylcholine biosynthesis, arginine and proline metabolism.

Objectives: Window entrapment in cats can lead to reduced blood flow to the spinal cord, muscles and nerves, resulting in ischaemic neuromyelomyopathy. The severity and duration of entrapment greatly influence clinical and neurological outcomes, as well as prognosis. The aim of the present retrospective multicentric study (2005-2022) was to describe clinical, neurological and selected clinicopathological findings, as well as the outcome of cats trapped in bottom-hung windows, presented to both first-opinion and referral-only clinics.

Iron fortification compounds are of special interest to treat iron deficiency anemia, however, the dose-response effects of these fortificants on liver and renal functions have not been extensively reported in human subjects. The present study determines the effects of prebiotics and iron fortificants on liver function tests (LFTs) and renal function tests (RFTs) among women of reproductive age (WRA). A double-blind randomized controlled trial was performed for the duration of 90 days.

Evaluating renal function is essential for managing captive wild animals, particularly threatened species like the Amazonian manatee () in rehabilitation and prerelease programs. A series of urine diagnostic tests, such as gross appearance, semiquantitative chemical analyses, microscopic review of sediments, and quantitative analyses of urea and creatinine, were performed in 57 free-catch urine samples. On the same occasion, 52 serum samples from the same individuals were analyzed for creatine kinase activity, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, albumin, sodium, potassium, and chloride concentrations; serum symmetric dimethylarginine (SDMA) was measured for the first time in the species.
