AI Article Synopsis

  • Multiple sclerosis impacts the central nervous system, leading to symptoms like vision issues, physical activity challenges, and stability problems.
  • Central positional vertigo can occasionally appear as an early symptom of multiple sclerosis, which is uncommon.
  • This highlights the need for doctors to carefully monitor and measure initial symptoms to ensure accurate diagnosis of multiple sclerosis.

Article Abstract

Multiple sclerosis is a disease that affects the central nervous system, resulting in various symptoms such as vision, physical activity, and stability. Central positional vertigo as initial multiple sclerosis symptoms are a rare case. It increases the attention of doctors to follow accurate measurements to diagnose multi sclerosis regarding the initial symptoms.

EBV-specific T-cell immunity: relevance for multiple sclerosis.

Front Immunol

December 2024

Department of Neurology with Institute of Translational Neurology, University Hospital Münster, Münster, Germany.

Genetic and environmental factors jointly determine the susceptibility to develop multiple sclerosis (MS). Improvements in the design of epidemiological studies have helped to identify consistent environmental risk associations such as the increased susceptibility for MS following Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, while biological mechanisms that drive the association between EBV and MS remain incompletely understood. An increased and broadened repertoire of antibody and T-cell immune responses to EBV-encoded antigens, especially to the dominant CD4 T-cell EBV nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA1), is consistently observed in patients with MS, indicating that protective EBV-specific immune responses are deregulated in MS and potentially contribute to disease development.

Here we present a rare case of hemorrhagic longitudinally extensive transverse myelitis (LETM) as a first presentation of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder. Even though the patient received aggressive treatment, he showed no significant improvement. Our case highlights the importance of prompt intervention in the case of hemorrhagic myelitis and the diagnostic challenges of hemorrhagic LETM.

Background And Objectives: Generic formulations of glatiramer acetate have been available since 2015 yet remain underprescribed relative to the branded product. We sought to characterize the association between branded glatiramer prescribing in the Medicare program and financial payments from the manufacturer (Teva Pharmaceuticals).

Methods: Using publicly available Medicare Part D and Open Payments data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, we evaluated overall utilization from 2012 to 2021 and compared the prevalence, frequency, and magnitude of financial payments made in 2019 to neurologists who prescribed branded and generic versions of glatiramer in 2020.

Background: The management of multiple sclerosis (MS) during pregnancy poses significant challenges. This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of three natalizumab treatment strategies during pregnancy from the UK healthcare system's perspective.

Methods: A Markov model was developed to assess the health outcomes and costs associated with three treatment strategies: continuous natalizumab treatment throughout pregnancy, treatment until the first trimester followed by discontinuation, and discontinuation at conception with resumption post-pregnancy.

Protective Effects of Heat-Killed Lactobacilli against Plasma-Induced Neurotoxicity in Multiple Sclerosis.

Probiotics Antimicrob Proteins

January 2025

Department of Cell and Molecular Biology and Microbiology, Faculty of Biological Science and Technology, University of Isfahan, Isfahan, Iran.

Heat-killed lactobacilli seem to have protective effects against oxidative stress and neurotoxicity. This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant properties of specific heat-killed lactobacilli extracts and determine their neuroprotective effects against the neurotoxicity induced by blood plasma from people with multiple sclerosis (MS). The antioxidant activity of the three heat-killed lactobacilli was measured using the DPPH assay.
