Predicting the Surface Tension of Deep Eutectic Solvents: A Step Forward in the Use of Greener Solvents. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Deep eutectic solvents (DES) are an important class of green solvents that have been developed as an alternative to toxic solvents. However, the large-scale industrial application of DESs requires fine-tuning their physicochemical properties. Among others, surface tension is one of such properties that have to be considered while designing novel DESs. In this work, we present the results of a detailed evaluation of Quantitative Structure-Property Relationships (QSPR) modeling efforts designed to predict the surface tension of DESs, following the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) guidelines. The data set used comprises a large number of structurally diverse binary DESs and the models were built systematically through rigorous validation methods, including 'mixtures-out'- and 'compounds-out'-based data splitting. The most predictive individual QSPR model found is shown to be statistically robust, besides providing valuable information about the structural and physicochemical features responsible for the surface tension of DESs. Furthermore, the intelligent consensus prediction strategy applied to multiple predictive models led to consensus models with similar statistical robustness to the individual QSPR model. The benefits of the present work stand out also from its reproducibility since it relies on fully specified computational procedures and on publicly available tools. Finally, our results not only guide the future design and screening of novel DESs with a desirable surface tension but also lays out strategies for efficiently setting up silico-based models for binary mixtures.

Reversibly crosslinked polymer networks - polymer networks that can undergo bond association and dissociation reactions - rearrange their structures while maintaining their overall integrity, thus resulting in unique properties such as self-healing, reprocessability, shape memory and adaptability. Here, we show that the introduction of crosslinks, whether reversible or permanent, directly impacts the equilibrium polymer density and hence the material's surface tension. For a limiting case where the bonds are the same size as the polymer chain bonds, simulations, Flory hypotheses and thermodynamic calculations show that the crosslinks induce an increased entropic cohesion in the liquid.

Pulmonary surfactant is a membranous complex that enables breathing dynamics at the respiratory surface. Extremely low values of surface tension are achieved at end-expiration thanks to a unique mixture of lipids and proteins. In particular, the hydrophobic surfactant proteins, specially the protein SP-B, are crucial for surfactant biophysical function, in order to provide the surfactant lipid matrix with the ability to form membranous multi-layered interfacial films that sustain optimal mechanical properties.

Force of adhesion between droplets and super-hydrophobic surfaces: Closed-form analytical expressions.

J Chem Phys

December 2024

Departamento de Física Química, Instituto de Física, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City 04510, Mexico.

Super-hydrophobic and liquid-repellent surfaces can be characterized experimentally in tensile adhesion experiments with the force (FAdh) required to detach a droplet from such surfaces, but analytical expressions that relate FAdh to the surface energy, w, are still missing. In this work, we derive analytical expressions for FAdh between droplets or radius r and super-hydrophobic surfaces on which the contact angle is greater than 150°. By applying the general condition for the onset of instability in different mechanical configurations, we find FAdh = -πwr and FAdh ≈ -(4/5)πwr, for the fixed-force and fixed-grip configurations, respectively, as well as other expressions that depend on the ratio of the spring constant of a generic force measuring apparatus to the surface tension of the liquid composing the droplet.

Air-Drying for Rapid Manufacture of Flexible Aramid Nanofiber Aerogel Fibers with Robust Mechanical Properties and Thermal Insulation in Harsh Environments.

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis, Optimization and CAE Software for Industrial Equipment, National Engineering Research Center for Advanced Polymer Processing Technology, Zhengzhou University, Zhengzhou, 450002, China.

Aerogel fibers uniting characteristics of both aerogels (lightweight and porosity) and fibers (flexibility and wearability) exhibit a great potential for the production of the next generation of thermal protection textiles; still, the complex drying procedures and mechanical brittleness remain the main obstacles toward further exploitation. Herein, flexible and robust aramid nanofiber aerogel fibers (ANAFs) are scalably prepared by continuous wet-spinning coupled with fast air-drying. This synthesis involves calcium ions (Ca⁺) cross-linking and solvent displacement by low surface tension solvents, to enhance skeleton strength and reduce the capillary force during evaporation, respectively, thus minimizing shrinkage to 29.

Context: In the context of biomaterials, triethylene glycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) is a widely used monomer in dental resins due to its favorable mechanical properties and ease of polymerization. However, improving its structural stability and enhancing its performance in biological applications remain crucial goals. This study examines the impact of incorporating gold (Au) nanoparticles into the TEGDMA matrix, focusing on their potential to improve mechanical, thermal, and optical properties for biomedical applications.
