During out-of-area military operations, the presence of carcinogenic and/or genotoxic agents has been reported, posing potential health risks to deployed soldiers. Military working dogs (MWDs), trained to detect explosives in the same environments as soldiers, could also serve as sentinel animals, providing valuable information on exposure to hazardous agents. These dogs can help identify environmental and potential adverse effects on their health and that of their handlers, possibly before relevant pathologies manifest.

Chronic inflammation, oxidative stress, and DNA damage are observed in schistosomiasis and premature aging. However, the potential of these events to trigger stress-induced premature senescence (SIPS) throughout schistosomiasis progression remains overlooked, especially in response to the first-line pharmacological treatment. Thus, we investigated the relationship between oxidative stress and SIPS sentinel markers in untreated Schistosoma mansoni-infected mice and those receiving praziquantel (Pz)-based reference treatment.

Background: The clinical course of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is highly variable and unpredictable, with multiple genetic variants influencing IPF outcomes. Notably, rare pathogenic variants in telomere-related genes are associated with poorer clinical outcomes in these patients. Here we assessed whether rare qualifying variants (QVs) in monogenic adult-onset pulmonary fibrosis (PF) genes are associated with IPF survival.

Chemical modifications in DNA impact gene regulation and chromatin structure. DNA oxidation, for example, alters gene expression, DNA synthesis and cell cycle progression. Modification of telomeric DNA by oxidation is emerging as a marker of genotoxic damage and is associated with reduced genome integrity and changes in telomere length and telomerase activity.
