Purpose Of Review: to review recent advances in the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of deep fungal infections.
Recent Findings: Mycetoma and chromoblastomycosis are the only deep fungal infections incorporated in the list of neglected tropical diseases. These infections start in the skin but progress to deep tissues if not recognized early. A wide array of fungal pathogens are the causative agents. Molecular methods allow for early and accurate identification of the pathogens, but are unfortunately not available in endemic areas. Treatment options are mostly based upon clinical experience rather than on well-designed clinical trials.
Summary: Deep fungal infections of the skin and soft tissues are rare conditions of wide world distribution but mostly reported from tropical countries. Urgent need for affordable and easily accessible molecular methods and well-conducted studies to allow for accurate diagnosis and to provide evidence to guide proper therapy are urgently needed.

Plasmids play a crucial role in facilitating genetic exchange and enhancing the adaptability of microbial communities. Despite their importance, environmental plasmids remain understudied, particularly those in fragile and underexplored ecosystems such as the deep-sea. In this paper we implemented a bioinformatics pipeline to study the composition, diversity, and functional attributes of plasmid communities (plasmidome) in 81 deep-sea metagenomes from the Tara and Malaspina expeditions, sampled from the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans at depths ranging from 270 to 4005 m.

Deep-fat frying (DF) of mushrooms is favored by consumers due to its appealing sensory characteristics. However, their high oil absorption can lead to obesity and elevated cholesterol levels. Therefore, developing healthy food coatings as oil barriers and water-holding layers is essential.

Obtaining a timescale for bacterial evolution is crucial to understand early life evolution but is difficult owing to the scarcity of bacterial fossils. Here, we introduce multiple new time constraints to calibrate bacterial evolution based on ancient symbiosis. This idea is implemented using a bacterial tree constructed with genes found in the mitochondrial lineages phylogenetically embedded within Proteobacteria.

Purpose: To clarify the clinical and imaging characteristics of Candida keratitis using in vivo confocal microscopy (IVCM) for improved early diagnosis and management.
Methods: A retrospective study of 40 patients with Candida keratitis at Beijing Tongren Hospital from January 2015 to December 2023 was conducted. Data included demographics, risk factors, clinical assessments, lab tests, and IVCM images.

Purpose: Abdominal wall reconstruction is a common surgical procedure, with a post-operative risk of mesh-associated infection of which management is poorly known. This study aims to comprehensively analyze clinical and microbiological aspects of mesh infection, treatment modalities, and associated outcomes.
Methods: Patients with abdominal mesh infection were included in a retrospective observational cohort (2010-2023).
