Background: The case fatality rate and the risk of complications due to pertussis is very high in infants. Asia has the second highest childhood pertussis burden. The study aimed to assess the prevalence, clinical complications, and mortality rates of pertussis disease requiring hospitalization among young infants in Malaysia.
Methods: The study was a one-year, hospital-based, multi-site surveillance of infants less than six months of age with symptoms consistent with pertussis and a cross-sectional analysis of their mothers for recent pertussis infection. Information was obtained from medical records and interviews with the parents. Pertussis diagnosis was confirmed for all infants through serum anti-PT titration test or PCR test.
Results: 441 possible cases of pertussis were included in this study. Of these, 12.7 % had laboratory confirmation of pertussis. Infants with confirmed pertussis had significantly higher rates of cyanosis (37.5 % vs 8.6 %; p < 0.0001) and apnea (12.5 % vs 3.9 %; p = 0.027) than test-negative infants. Most infants from both groups were in recovery/recovered at discharge. Those with confirmed pertussis had higher case fatality rate than test-negative cases (5.4 % vs 1.0 %; p = 0.094), but the difference did not reach significance. The majority of confirmed pertussis cases (89.3 %) occurred in infants too young to be fully vaccinated or under-vaccinated for their age. Both test-negative and confirmed pertussis resulted in work-day losses and incurred costs for both parents.
Conclusions: A high pertussis disease burden persists in infants less than six months of age, especially among those un- and under-vaccinated. Maternal and complete, on-time infant vaccination is important to reduce disease burden.

Background: HFMD is a common infectious disease that is prevalent worldwide. In many provinces in China, there have been outbreaks and epidemics of whooping cough, posing a threat to public health.
Purpose: It is crucial to grasp the epidemiological characteristics of HFMD in Quzhou and establish a prediction model for HFMD to lay the foundation for early warning of HFMD.

The dynamics of the genetic diversity of pathogens, including the emergence of lineages with increased fitness, is a foundational concept of disease ecology with key public-health implications. However, the identification of such lineages and estimation of associated fitness remain challenging, and is rarely done outside densely sampled systems. Here we present phylowave, a scalable approach that summarizes changes in population composition in phylogenetic trees, enabling the automatic detection of lineages based on shared fitness and evolutionary relationships.

Objective: A comprehensive bioinformatics analysis was conducted to investigate potential new diagnostic biomarkers and immune infiltration characteristics associated with tubulointerstitial injury in lupus nephritis (LN), and to examine possible correlations between key genes and infiltrating immune cells.
Methods: The GSE32591, GSE113342, and GSE200306 datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus database and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified in the pooled dataset. Support vector machine-recursive feature elimination analysis and the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator regression model were used to screen for possible markers, and the compositional patterns of the 22 types of immune cell fractions in LN were determined using CIBERSORT.

In the post-pandemic era, research on respiratory diseases should refocus on pathogens other than the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Respiratory pathogens, highly infectious to children, with to different modes of infection, such as single-pathogen infections and co-infections. Understanding the seasonal patterns of these pathogens, alongside identifying single infections and co-infections and their impact on the pediatric immune status, is crucial for clinical diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis in children.

Pertussis remains a significant public health concern despite effective vaccines due to diagnostic challenges and symptom overlap with other respiratory infections. This study assesses the prevalence of using advanced polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing and examines the clinical outcomes over a one-month follow-up. We conducted a cross-sectional study at the University Hospital of Larissa, Greece, from April to June 2024, collecting 532 nasopharyngeal swabs from patients with respiratory symptoms.
