There is increasing interest in thiosulfate-driven denitrification for low C/N wastewater treatment, but the denitrification performance varies with the thiosulfate oxidation pathways. Models have been developed to predict the products of denitrification, but few consider thiosulfate reduction to elemental sulfur (S), an undesirable reaction that can intensify electron competition with denitrifying enzymes. In this study, the model using indirect coupling of electrons (ICE) was developed to predict S formation and electron competition during thiosulfate-driven denitrification. Kinetic data were obtained from sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) dominated by the branched pathway and were used to calibrate and validate the model. Electron competition was investigated under different operating conditions. Modeling results reveal that electrons produced in the first step of thiosulfate oxidation typically prioritize thiosulfate reduction, then nitrate reduction, and finally nitrite reduction. However, the electron consumption rate for S formation decreases sharply with the decline of thiosulfate concentration. Thus, a continuous feeding strategy was effective in alleviating the competition between thiosulfate reduction and denitrifying enzymes. Electron competition leads to nitrite accumulation, which could be a reliable substrate for anammox. The model was further evaluated with anammox integration. Results suggested that the branched pathway and continuous supply of thiosulfate are favorable to create a symbiotic relationship between SOB and anammox.

Phase separation plays a crucial role in many natural and industrial processes, such as the formation of clouds and minerals and the distillation of crude oil. In metals and alloys, phase separation is an important approach often utilized to improve their mechanical strength for use in construction, automobile, and aerospace manufacturing. Despite its importance in many processes, the atomic details of phase separation are largely unknown.

The elementary mechanism and site studies of nanozyme-based inhibition reactions are ambiguous and urgently require advanced nanozymes as mediators to elucidate the inhibition effect. To this end, we develop a class of nanozymes featuring single Cu-N catalytic configurations and B-O sites as binding configurations on a porous nitrogen-doped carbon substrate (B/Cu) for inducing modulable inhibition transfer at the atomic level. The full redistribution of electrons across the Cu-N sites, induced by B-O sites incorporation, yields B/Cu with enhanced peroxidase-like activity versus Cu.

The formation of large polarons resulting from the Fröhlich coupling of photogenerated carriers with the polarized crystal lattice is considered crucial in shaping the outstanding optoelectronic properties in hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite crystals. Until now, the initial polaron dynamics after photoexcitation have remained elusive in the hybrid perovskite system. Here, based on the terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and optical-pump terahertz probe, we access the nature of interplay between photoexcited unbound charge carriers and optical phonons in MAPbBr within the initial 5 ps after excitation and have demonstrated the simultaneous existence of both electron- and hole-polarons, together with the photogenerated carrier dynamic process.

Melanin with antioxidant and antibacterial properties can be used in food, cosmetics, biotechnology, and other fields, but its insolubility become a main challenge hindering for its application. In this study, water-soluble melanin produced by the novel species Streptomyces vilmorinianum YP1 was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), UVvisible spectroscopy (with an absorption peak at 220nm), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The glycosyltransferase gene ORF14 was knocked out, which improved the production of water-soluble melanin by inhibiting competitive pathway.

The importance of developing multifunctional nanomaterials for sensing technologies is increasing with the arrival of nanotechnology. In this study, we describe the introduction of novel nanoprobe electro-active material into the architecture of an electrochemical immuno-sensor. Based on the electrochemical immuno-sensor, functionalized tin oxide/graphitic carbon nitride nanocomposite (fSnO/g-CN) was synthesized and then analyte specific anti-aflatoxin M monoclonal antibody (AFM-ab) combined to form an electro-active nanoprobe (fSnO/g-CN/AFM-ab).
