Our understanding of identifying and monitoring surge-type glacier distribution patterns, fluctuations, periodicities, and occurrence mechanism under the changing climate is challenging and scarce due to small numbers, limitations on the spatiotemporal coverage of remote sensing observations, and insufficient field-based glaciological data from the High Mountain Asia. The surging glaciers have caused major hazards, and their movement can destroy peripheral and downstream areas like roads, connecting bridges, villages, and hydropower stations and trigger a glacial lake outburst flood or form a dammed (moraine or ice) lake in High Mountain Asia (HMA) in the recent past. Many glaciers have experienced a mass loss and retreat due to ongoing climate change in HMA in recent decades, whereas studies conducted in the Karakorum, Pamir, Tien Shan, and Kunlun Shan regions have reported the surging of the glaciers.

To maximize the benefits of a continuous flow reaction, a continuous work-up is also needed. Herein, we present a process design and novel equipment for a continuous amine resolution reaction, integrated with liquid-liquid (L-L) extraction, back-extraction into a different solvent, and crystallisation purification for product isolation. The reaction, in iso-propyl acetate, flows through a heated fixed-bed reactor with solid supported lipase which catalyses the resolution of ()-1-phenylethylamine to give the ()-amide in 50% conversion and 96% enantiomeric excess (ee).

Multi-Section Magnetic Soft Robot with Multirobot Navigation System for Vasculature Intervention.

Cyborg Bionic Syst

November 2024

Department of Electromechanical Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau, Macau, China.

Magnetic soft robots have recently become a promising technology that has been applied to minimally invasive cardiovascular surgery. This paper presents the analytical modeling of a novel multi-section magnetic soft robot (MS-MSR) with multi-curvature bending, which is maneuvered by an associated collaborative multirobot navigation system (CMNS) with magnetic actuation and ultrasound guidance targeted for intravascular intervention. The kinematic and dynamic analysis of the MS-MSR's telescopic motion is performed using the optimized Cosserat rod model by considering the effect of an external heterogeneous magnetic field, which is generated by a mobile magnetic actuation manipulator to adapt to complex steering scenarios.

Article Synopsis
  • Optical turbulence affects the resolution of ground-based telescopes, causing image distortion, which can be mitigated by advanced atmospheric forecasting techniques for scheduling observations and optimizing adaptive optics.
  • This study introduces a novel boundary layer parameterization approach using the CLUBB model for predicting optical turbulence, enhancing model simplicity and testing capabilities compared to traditional mesoscale models.
  • The results indicate that the CLUBB model effectively captures the evolution of optical turbulence profiles, showing strong statistical agreement with field measurements, achieving better accuracy than previous mesoscale methods.

This study proposes what we believe to be a novel high-spectral-resolution three-frequency Rayleigh lidar for simultaneously measuring middle atmosphere temperature and wind. The temperature and wind could be retrieved without assuming an external reference temperature, as typical for a traditional Rayleigh Doppler lidar. Adopting a similar idea used in sodium temperature/wind lidar, this system alternatively emits laser pulses at three frequencies.
