Pancreatoscopy plays a significant role in the diagnosis and treatment of pancreatic diseases. However, the risk of pancreatoscopy is remarkably greater than that of other endoscopic procedures, such as gastroscopy and bronchoscopy, owing to its severe invasiveness. In comparison, virtual pancreatoscopy (VP) has shown notable advantages. However, because of the low resolution of current computed tomography (CT) technology and the small diameter of the pancreatic duct, VP has limited clinical use. In this study, an optimal path algorithm and super-resolution technique are investigated for the development of an open-source software platform for VP based on 3D Slicer. The proposed segmentation of the pancreatic duct from the abdominal CT images reached an average Dice coefficient of 0.85 with a standard deviation of 0.04. Owing to the excellent segmentation performance, a fly-through visualization of both the inside and outside of the duct was successfully reconstructed, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of VP. In addition, a quantitative analysis of the wall thickness and topology of the duct provides more insight into pancreatic diseases than a fly-through visualization. The entire VP system developed in this study is available at https://github.com/gaoyi/VirtualEndoscopy.git .

The main pancreatic duct and the common bile duct can be evaluated with a variety of evolving invasive and non-invasive techniques. Virtual CT pancreatoscopy obtained using special computer software is a recent non-invasive innovation which shows the details of the ductal surface (endoluminal view) with greater precision. The use of special computer software in MRI in order to obtain pancreatic ductal surface details or a virtual MR pancreatoscopy has not been described up to now.

Background: We sought to validate computed tomographic virtual pancreatoscopy (CT-VP) created by multidetector row CT (MD-CT) in the clinical diagnosis of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreas.

Methods: Five cases of pancreatic IPMNs were included in this study. A nasopancreatic drainage tube was inserted and the pancreatic duct was filled with contrast medium, after which an upper abdominal scan was performed by MD-CT.

Background/aims: Virtual endoscopy is a new method of diagnosis using computer processing of three-dimensional images data sets. However, there are few reports about the clinical application of virtual endoscopy for the pancreas. In this study, we evaluated the feasibility of surface-rendered magnetic resonance virtual endoscopy for pancreatic cancer.

We used computer-based virtual endoscopy techniques as a novel approach to clarify the three-dimensional (3D) surgical anatomy of the pancreas and of mucin-producing pancreatic tumors. Thirteen cases (18 lesions) of mucin-producing pancreatic tumors were investigated by virtual pancreatoscopy. Virtual endoscopic images were generated with virtual endoscopy software application on UNIX workstations.
