The Stenotrophomonas maltophilia L2 cephalosporinase is one of two beta-lactamases which afford S. maltophilia beta-lactam resistance. With the overuse of beta-lactams, selective pressures have contributed to the evolution of these proteins, generating proteins with an extended spectrum of activity.

Overusing blood cultures (BCxs) can lead to false positives, unnecessary antibiotics, and increased healthcare costs. Despite studies on inpatient BCx algorithms, none have focused on cardiothoracic surgery (CTS) patients, with complex postoperative care and invasive devices. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of a BCx algorithm on BCx event (BCE) rates in CTS step-down units.

Achilles tendon overuse injuries are common for long-distance runners. Ankle exos (exoskeletons and exosuits) are wearable devices that can reduce Achilles tendon loading and could potentially aid in the rehabilitation or prevention of these injuries by helping to mitigate and control tissue loading. However, most ankle exos are confined to controlled lab testing and are not practical to use in real-world running.

Background: Delayed prescription is a strategy used in various countries to reduce antibiotic overuse and contend the effects of antibiotic resistance; however this practice is not yet used in Switzerland. The present qualitative study was thus conducted to investigate Swiss patients' attitudes towards the possible implementation of delayed prescription.
Method: Five focus groups with the general population based on a fixed script of questions to elicit opinions on delayed prescription.
