Summary: Palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK), characterised by excessive epidermal thickening of the skin on the palms and/or plantar surfaces of the feet, can be hereditary or acquired. Here, we report a case of a 53-year-old woman with a history of sub-optimally controlled diabetes mellitus presenting with fevers and decreased Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) to a tertiary hospital. She was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), with blood glucose at 40 mmol/L and ketones at 7 mmol/L, in the setting of a methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus necrotising soft tissue back infection.

Objective: Previous retrospective studies have established a relationship between postoperative hypoglycemia and adverse outcomes after cardiac surgery, but none have accounted for the cause of hypoglycemia.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed of patients who underwent cardiac surgery at a single institution between 2016 and 2021. Patients were categorized as hypoglycemic if they had 1 or more postoperative blood glucose measurement less than 70 mg/dL and normoglycemic otherwise.

Purpose: We evaluated the effectiveness of starting long-acting insulin early during managing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) in pediatric patients.

Methods: Patients with DKA were randomly assigned to receive either traditional DKA management protocol or concurrent administration of subcutaneous (SC) long-acting insulin alongside intravenous insulin during DKA treatment. The primary outcomes were the duration of insulin infusion and the adverse effects of the intervention, mainly hypoglycemia and hypokalemia.

Ultra-rapid insulin lispro is an innovative insulin analogue designed to achieve rapid onset and short duration of action, aimed at optimizing glycemic control in patients with diabetes. This was a double-blind, randomized, 2-period, crossover clamp study to evaluate the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD), along with safety profiles, of a potential biosimilar ultra-rapid insulin lispro compared to the reference product in healthy White men. A total of 35 healthy volunteers completed hyperinsulinemic euglycemic clamp procedures across both study periods.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) has a millennia-long history, with early references dating back to ancient Egypt and India. However, it was not until the 20th century that the connection between diabetes and insulin was fully understood. The sequencing of insulin in the 1950s initiated the convergence of biotechnology and diabetes management, leading to the development of recombinant human insulin in 1982.
