The influence of readily available carbohydrates (sugar, xylitol and sorbitol) on the metabolic processes was studied in 80 children with diabetes mellitus. It was found that even low doses (20 g) of sorbitol and xylitol produced an unfavourable effect on the lipid metabolism and liver function. It is recommended that low doses (20 g) of sugar be included into the diet for children with diabetes mellitus.

Article Synopsis
  • The study developed strong and water-resistant edible films using curdlan as the main ingredient and various plasticizers like glycerol and ethylene glycol.
  • Advanced techniques like FTIR, XRD, and SEM were used to assess the films' properties before and after adding plasticizers, revealing that these additives changed the film's structure and improved flexibility.
  • Glycerol was found to be the most effective plasticizer, significantly increasing the film's extensibility, making CL-GLY films promising for sustainable food packaging solutions.

We carried out an experimental ultrasonic study of polyhydric alcohols with the general chemical formula CH(OH) with an increasing number of OH groups: glycerol ( = 3), erythritol ( = 4), xylitol ( = 5), sorbitol ( = 6). The baric and temperature dependences of the elastic characteristics of these substances in the crystalline and glassy states were studied both under isothermal compression up to 1 GPa and during the isobaric heating of 77-295 K. For glycerol, glasses were obtained at different cooling rates, glass-liquid transitions were studied at different pressures.

The Expert Panel for Cosmetic Ingredient Safety (Panel) assessed the safety of Mannitol, Sorbitol, and Xylitol as used in cosmetics. These ingredients are reported to function as humectants, skin-conditioning agents, or flavoring agents. The Panel considered the available data and concluded that these sugar alcohol ingredients are safe in cosmetics in the present practices of use and concentration described in the safety assessment.

Increasing interest in biodegradable and cost-effective materials derived from renewable resources has led to the development of injection-moldable thermoplastic starch (TPS). Plasticizers constitute an indispensable additive for manufacturing TPS, influencing both its thermomechanical processability and performance. The aim of the current work is thus to study the effect of single and mixed polyol plasticizers on the performance of injection-molded TPS.
