Hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS) is a systemic complication of an infection with Shiga toxin (Stx)-producing enterohemorrhagic , primarily leading to acute kidney injury (AKI) and microangiopathic hemolytic anemia. Although free heme has been found to aggravate renal damage in hemolytic diseases, the relevance of the heme-degrading enzyme heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1, encoded by ) in HUS has not yet been investigated. We hypothesized that HO-1 also important in acute phase responses in damage and inflammation, contributes to renal pathogenesis in HUS.

Introduction: Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that affects ∼10 % of women. A significant fraction of patients experience limited or no efficacy with current therapies. Tissue adjacent to endometriosis lesions often exhibits increased neurite and vascular density, suggesting that disease pathology involves neurotrophic activity and angiogenesis.

Purpose: To present a case of severe foveal cavitation and near complete macular hole secondary to tamoxifen toxicity that improved after tamoxifen cessation and topical dorzolamide therapy.
Methods: A 45-year-old female referred with bilateral tamoxifen maculopathy. Bilateral foveal cavitation, worse in the right eye (OD) with draping of the internal limiting membrane, was noted with baseline optical coherence tomography.

Post-mitotic, non-proliferative dermal fibroblasts have crucial functions in maintenance and restoration of tissue homeostasis. They are involved in essential processes such as wound healing, pigmentation and hair growth, but also tumor development and aging-associated diseases. These processes are energetically highly demanding and error prone when mitochondrial damage occurs.
