Many mycophagous species have adapted to tolerate high concentrations of mycotoxins, an ability not reported in any other eukaryotes. Although an association between mycophagy and mycotoxin tolerance has been established in many species, the genetic mechanisms of the tolerance are unknown. This study presents the inter- and intraspecific variation in the mycotoxin tolerance trait. We studied the mycotoxin tolerance in four species from four separate clades within the - radiation from two distinct locations. The effect of mycotoxin treatment on 20 isofemale lines per species was studied using seven gross phenotypes: survival to pupation, survival to eclosion, development time to pupation and eclosion, thorax length, fecundity, and longevity. We observed interspecific variation among four species, with being the most tolerant, followed by , , and , in that order. The results also revealed geographical variation and intraspecific genetic variation in mycotoxin tolerance. This report provides the foundation for further delineating the genetic mechanisms of the mycotoxin tolerance trait.

Mycotoxin exposure from contaminated food is a significant global health issue, particularly among vulnerable children. Given limited data on mycotoxin exposure among Namibian children, this study investigated mycotoxin types and levels in foods, evaluated dietary mycotoxin exposure from processed cereal foods in children under age five from rural households in Oshana region, Namibia. Mycotoxins in cereal-based food samples (n = 162) (mahangu flour (n = 35), sorghum flour (n = 13), mahangu thin/thick porridge (n = 54), oshikundu (n = 56), and omungome (n = 4)) were determined by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Brazil is an influential and successful food-producing country, where we can highlight artisanal cheeses gaining visibility in foreign markets. Some of these cheeses are made from raw milk, making them susceptible to contamination by microorganisms, including fungi, which can produce harmful mycotoxins. Patulin (PAT), a notorious mycotoxin widely found in fruits and their derived products, poses serious health risks to humans and animals due to its high toxicity. Biodegradation based on microbial enzymes has shown broad application prospects in controlling PAT contamination due to its environmental friendliness, high efficiency, strong specificity, and mild conditions of action. Bacillus subtilis is a cosmopolitan probiotic bacterium with an extensive enzymatic profile, which could serve as a valuable resource for the effective production of a range of enzymes utilized in various industrial processes and production applications.
