The development of auditory sensors and systems is essential in smart materials of robotics and is placed at the strategic category of mutual communication between humans and robots. We designed prototypes of the rubber-made equilibrium and auditory sensors, mimicking hair cells in the saccule and the cochlea at the vestibule of the human ear by utilizing our previously proposed technique of electrolytic polymerization on the hybrid fluid rubber (HF rubber). The fabricated artificial hair cells embedded with mimicked free nerve endings and Pacinian corpuscles, which are well-known receptors in the human skin and have already been elucidated effective in the previous study, have the intelligence of equilibrium and auditory sensing. Moreover, they have a voltage that is generated from built-in electricity caused by the ionized particles and molecules in the HF rubber due to piezoelectricity. We verified the equilibrium and auditory characteristics by measuring the changes in voltage with inclination, vibration over a wide frequency range, and sound waves. We elucidated experimentally that the intelligence has optimum morphological conditions. This work has the possibility of advancing the novel technology of state-of-the-art social robotics.

Heterozygous R391 TUBB4B pathogenic variations are responsible for an association of hearing loss and retinal dystrophy in human. With the goal of understanding the functions of TuBB4b and the pathogenic role of R391 variations, we characterized tubB4B in zebrafish and identified the gene regulatory elements necessary and sufficient for expression of TubB4b as in endogenous tissues. Using knock-out and transgenic approaches, we determined that R391 mutations impair neither localization of TubB4B within sensory hair cells (SHC) nor their structure, but induced to a small decrease in SHC number from anterior crista.

The role of gene mutations and immune responses in sensorineural hearing loss.

Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a prevalent clinical condition primarily attributed to dysfunction within various components of the auditory pathway, spanning from the inner ear to the auditory cortex. Recent research has illuminated immune and inflammation-mediated disorders of the inner ear as critical contributors to SNHL. Disruptions in the equilibrium of inflammatory mediators, chemokines, the complement system, and inflammatory vesicles within the cochlea provoke aberrations in immune cell activity, fostering a chronic pro-inflammatory milieu that detrimentally affects the structural and functional integrity of the inner ear, culminating in hearing impairment.

Objective: To retrospectively analyze clinical features in adolescent Menière's disease (MD).

Methods: The medical records of adolescents with MD (11-17 years old) from May 2014 to March 2023 in Shandong Provincial ENT Hospital were retrospectively analyzed, including clinical features, a battery of auditory and vestibular function tests, sensory organization test, and imaging assessments. Patients with recurrent vertigo of childhood (RVC) were as controls.

In multicellular tissues, the size and shape of cells are intricately linked with their physiological functions. In the vertebrate auditory organ, the neurosensory epithelium develops as a mosaic of sensory hair cells (HCs), and their glial-like supporting cells, which have distinct morphologies and functional properties at different frequency positions along its tonotopic long axis. In the chick cochlea, the basilar papilla (BP), proximal (high-frequency) HCs, are larger than their distal (low-frequency) counterparts, a morphological feature essential for sound perception.

Purpose: To explore the microstate characteristics and underlying brain network activity of Ménière's disease (MD) patients based on high-density electroencephalography (EEG), elucidate the association between microstate dynamics and clinical manifestation, and explore the potential of EEG microstate features as future neurobiomarkers for MD.

Methods: Thirty-two patients diagnosed with MD and 29 healthy controls (HC) matched for demographic characteristics were included in the study. Dysfunction and subjective symptom severity were assessed by neuropsychological questionnaires, pure tone audiometry, and vestibular function tests.
