The origin of fluorescence in carbon dots (C-dots) is still a puzzling phenomenon. The emission is, in most of the cases, due to molecular fluorophores formed in situ during the synthesis. The carbonization during C-dots processing does not allow, however, a fine control of the properties and makes finding the source of the fluorescence a challenging task. In this work, we present a strategy to embed a pre-formed fluorescent molecule, safranin O dye, into an amorphous carbonaceous dot obtained by citric acid carbonization. The dye is introduced in the melted solution of citric acid and after pyrolysis remains incorporated in a carbonaceous matrix to form red-emitting C-dots that are strongly resistant to photobleaching. Embedding dyes in amorphous C-dots represents an alternative method to optimize the emission in the whole visible spectrum.
Drug-induced liver injury (DILI) is a crucial factor that poses a significant threat to human health. Carbonized polymer dots (CPDs) are a class of exceptional fluorescent materials with diverse applications. However, their photoluminescence (PL) mechanism remained enigmatic and controversial, hindering further development and application. While molecular fluorophores explain primary fluorescence in some CPDs, the overall PL of CPDs still cannot be fully explained, such as their excitation-dependent behaviors, let alone the modulation of PL.
We present a model for the noise and inherent stochasticity of fluorescence signals in both continuous wave (CW) and time-gated (TG) conditions. When the fluorophores are subjected to an arbitrary excitation photon flux, we apply the model and compute the evolution of the probability mass function (pmf) for each quantum state comprising a fluorophore's electronic structure, and hence the dynamics of the resulting emission photon flux. Both the ensemble and stochastic models presented in this work have been verified using Monte Carlo molecular dynamic simulations that utilize the Gillespie algorithm.
Excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) molecules are promising fluorophores for various applications. Particularly, their self-absorption-free fluorescence properties would make them a perfect choice as emissive materials for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Nevertheless, to become effective emitters some of their properties need to be altered by structural modifications.
