During crystallization, conformational changes are often accompanied by the formation of interactions. Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy exhibits strong responses to the crystalline poly(lactic acid) (PLA). Therefore, we estimate the relative crystallinity and investigate the effect of conformational transition on the vibration of PLA by THz spectroscopy. By comparing with the results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), the validity of THz spectroscopy to calculate crystallinity is verified. Furthermore, the peak intensity of PLA at 2.01 THz increases with crystallinity. Combined with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), the vibrational intensity of PLA at 2.01 THz is highly correlated with the contribution of conformation, showing a linear relationship. In addition, the vibrational peak of PLA also reflects the interchain interactions. We believe that the increase in peak intensity with increasing crystallinity originates from the effect of the dipole-dipole interactions between the carbonyl groups. Our study demonstrates the ability of THz spectroscopy to estimate the crystallinity of PLA, and the peak at 2.01 THz shows conformational and interaction sensitivities.

This research proposes an all-metal metamaterial-based absorber with a novel geometry capable of refractive index sensing in the terahertz (THz) range. The structure consists of four concentric diamond-shaped gold resonators on the top of a gold metal plate; the resonators increase in height by 2 µm moving from the outer to the inner resonators, making the design distinctive. This novel configuration has played a very significant role in achieving multiple ultra-narrow resonant absorption peaks that produce very high sensitivity when employed as a refractive index sensor.

Terahertz radiation patterns can be registered using various detectors; however, in most cases, the scanning resolution is limited. Thus, we propose an alternative method for the detailed scanning of terahertz light field distributions after passing simple and complex structures. Our method relies on using a dielectric waveguide to achieve better sampling resolution.

This paper reviews recent developments and key advances in terahertz (THz) science, technology, and applications, focusing on 3 core areas: astronomy, telecommunications, and biophysics. In THz astronomy, it highlights major discoveries and ongoing projects, emphasizing the role of advanced superconducting technologies, including superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers, hot electron boundedness spectroscopy (HEB), transition-edge sensors (TESs), and kinetic inductance detectors (KIDs), while exploring prospects in the field. For THz telecommunication, it discusses progress in solid-state sources, new communication technologies operating within the THz band, and diverse modulation methods that enhance transmission capabilities.

THz metamaterials present unique opportunities for next-generation technologies and applications as they can fill the "THz gap" originating from the weak response of natural materials in this regime, providing a variety of novel or advanced electromagnetic wave control components and systems. Here, we propose a novel metamaterial design made of three-dimensional, metallic, "cactus-like" meta-atoms, showing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and enhanced refractive index sensing performance at low THz frequencies. Following a detailed theoretical analysis, the structure is realized experimentally using multiphoton polymerization and electroless silver plating.

High-precise determination of the drought and cold resistance of forage seeds using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy.

Owing to the complicated geographical locations and climates, cultivation and selection of forage seeds are challenging. For the first time, we qualitatively distinguished the drought and cold resistance of forage seeds with the time domain and refractive index spectra using terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy. A multilayer structure propagation (MSP) model was developed based on the effective medium and light transport theory to reveal the underlying biological mechanisms of drought and cold resistance of forage seeds.
