This work explores the techno-economic aspects of landfill leachate treatment by an integrated scheme composed of microfiltration (MF), nanofiltration (NF), and zeolite application for carbon and nitrogen removal. In bench-scale experiments, MF and NF were investigated, and zeolite batch tests were carried out to determine optimum conditions. A preliminary economic analysis is presented for a 200 m d full-scale treatment facility based on the data obtained from experimental tests and literature surveys. The maximum removals of 92%, 94%, and 79% for chemical oxygen demand (COD), absorbance at 254 nm, and ammonium nitrogen (NH-N) were achieved in bench experiments, respectively. It was possible to reach the local discharge standard for COD (200 mg L), but it was not possible to reach the Brazilian disposal requirement for NH-N (20 mg L). The total cost of the integrated MF + NF + zeolite system was estimated at 19.89 US$m. In this study, the costs of the zeolite application account for around 70% of the total costs of the integrated scheme. Membrane process integration was an adequate strategy for removing organic compounds at low operating costs; However, further NH-N depuration is needed to meet discharge requirements.

To address the challenge of antibiotic-containing wastewater, a novel micromagnetic carrier-modified integrated fixed-film activated sludge system (MC-IFAS) was developed for treating tetracycline (TC)-containing swine wastewater in this study. The magnetic effects of the MC significantly enhanced TC removal by improving TC biosorption and biodegradation in both the suspended activated sludge and the carrier-attached biofilm in the MC-IFAS. The increased electrostatic attraction and number of binding sites in both the activated sludge and the biofilm enhanced their TC biosorption capacities, particularly in the activated sludge.

Developing a reliable procedure for the growth of III-V nanowires (NW) on silicon (Si) substrates remains a significant challenge, as current methods rely on trial-and-error approaches with varying interpretations of critical process steps such as sample preparation, Au-Si alloy formation in the growth reactor, and nanowire alignment. Addressing these challenges is essential for enabling high-performance electronic and optoelectronic devices that combine the superior properties of III-V NW semiconductors with the well-established Si-based technology. Combining conventional scalable growth methods, such as Metalorganic Chemical Vapor Deposition (MOCVD) with in situ characterization using Environmental Transmission Electron Microscopy (ETEM-MOCVD) enables a deeper understanding of the growth dynamics, if that knowledge is transferable to the scalable processes.

The utilization of dual-working-electrode mode of interdigitated array (IDA) electrodes and other two-electrode systems has revolutionized electrochemical detection by enabling the simultaneous and independent detection of two species, accompanied by the exhibition of unique characteristics.
