Accurate and sensitive methods to quantify carotenoids in blood plasma/serum are the basis for assessing carotenoid intake and associating physiological effects. This chapter introduces carotenoid chemistry, an overview of carotenoid food sources, and current knowledge of carotenoid absorption and metabolism, along with factors that affect these processes. We also detail a commonly used method to extract plasma/serum carotenoids using liquid-liquid extraction and analysis by high performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). A spreadsheet to aid in this quantitative analysis can be found at www.github.com/CooperstoneLab/carotenoid-analysis.

Objectives: The Wolverine cutting balloon (CB) (Boston Scientific) is a specialized balloon catheter with microsurgical blades that is used for balloon-resistant lesions. The Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (MAUDE) database serves as a repository for reports of medical device complications. The aim of this study was to analyze complications associated with CB use during percutaneous coronary intervention in real-world contemporary practice.

Objective: Aim of this study was to critically appraise clinical evidence on the potential benefits of adjunctive use of superfoods green tea and turmeric as mouthrinse or local delivery agents in the treatment of periodontal disease.

Materials And Methods: Electronic searches were performed in four databases for randomized trials from inception to February 2024 assessing the supplemental use of superfoods green tea and turmeric for gingivitis/periodontitis treatment. After duplicate study selection, data extraction, and risk-of-bias assessment with the RoB 2 tool, random-effects meta-analyses of Mean Differences (MD) or Standardized Mean Differences (SMD) with their 95% confidence intervals (CI) were performed.

Improved deep canonical correlation fusion approach for detection of early mild cognitive impairment.

Med Biol Eng Comput

January 2025

Non-Invasive Imaging and Diagnostic Laboratory, Department of Applied Mechanics and Biomedical Engineering, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, India.

Detection of early mild cognitive impairment (EMCI) is clinically challenging as it involves subtle alterations in multiple brain sub-anatomic regions. Among different brain regions, the corpus callosum and lateral ventricles are primarily affected due to EMCI. In this study, an improved deep canonical correlation analysis (CCA) based framework is proposed to fuse magnetic resonance (MR) image features from lateral ventricular and corpus callosal structures for the detection of EMCI condition.

Both, Serendipita indica and AMF, show promise as sustainable biofertilizers for reforestation, improving nutrient uptake and stress tolerance, despite contrasting effects on photosynthetic capacity and biomass allocation. Reclaiming degraded areas is essential for biodiversity conservation and enhancing ecosystem services enhancement, especially when using native species. This study investigated Schinus terebinthifolius Raddi, a native Brazilian species, and its compatibility with plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPM), including an endophytic fungus (Serendipita indica) and a consortium of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF), to identify effective strategies for reforestation in nutrient-poor environments.
