Why do we have three rational number notations? The importance of percentages.

The integrated theory of numerical development provides a unified approach to understanding numerical development, including acquisition of knowledge about whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percentages, negatives, and relations among all of these types of numbers (Siegler, Thompson, & Schneider, 2011). Although, considerable progress has been made toward many aspects of this integration (Siegler, Im, Schiller, Tian, & Braithwaite, 2020), the role of percentages has received much less attention than that of the other types of numbers. This chapter is an effort to redress this imbalance by reporting data on understanding of percentages and their relations to other types of numbers. We first describe the integrated theory; then summarize what is known about development of understanding of whole numbers, fractions, and decimals; then describe recent progress in understanding the role of percentages; and finally consider instructional implications of the theory and research.

Institute for Forest Resources and Environment of Guizhou, College of Forestry, Guizhou University, Guiyang, 550025, Guizhou, China.

This study aims to explore the low phosphorus (P) tolerance of saplings from different Gleditsia sinensis Lam. families. It also seeks to screen for Gleditsia sinensis families with strong low P tolerance and identify key indicators for evaluating their tolerance.

Programmable and modular systems capable of orthogonal genomic and transcriptomic perturbations are crucial for biological research and treating human genetic diseases. Here, we present the minimal versatile genetic perturbation technology (mvGPT), a flexible toolkit designed for simultaneous and orthogonal gene editing, activation, and repression in human cells. The mvGPT combines an engineered compact prime editor (PE), a fusion activator MS2-p65-HSF1 (MPH), and a drive-and-process multiplex array that produces RNAs tailored to different types of genetic perturbation.

Soft tissue and bone tumors are rare, and their low frequency and diverse histological types make conducting large-scale clinical trials challenging. Patient-derived xenografts (PDX), entailing implantation of cancer specimens in immunocompromised mice, are emerging as a valuable translational model because PDX keeps the original tumors' character and drug sensitivity. We sequentially transplanted 166 surgical and biopsy specimens from orthopedic surgeries, including 138 soft tissue and bone tumors (81 malignant, 23 intermediate, and 34 benign), 16 metastatic bone tumors, 9 hematological malignancies, and 3 non-tumor tissues.

Pan-cancer analysis shows that BCAP31 is a potential prognostic and immunotherapeutic biomarker for multiple cancer types.

Front Immunol

Department of Otolaryngology, the Affiliated Suzhou Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou Municipal Hospital, Gusu School, Nanjing Medical University, Suzhou, Jiangsu, China.

Background: B-cell receptor-associated protein 31 (BCAP31) is a widely expressed transmembrane protein primarily located in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER), including the ER-mitochondria associated membranes. Emerging evidence suggests that BCAP31 may play a role in cancer development and progression, although its specific effects across different cancer types remain incompletely understood.

Methods: The raw data on BCAP31 expression in tumor and adjacent non-tumor (paracancerous) samples were obtained from the Broad Institute Cancer Cell Line Encyclopedia (CCLE) and UCSC databases.
