Background: Stabilized hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is increasingly used as a hospital disinfectant and antiseptic, yet its effect on N95 filtration facemask respirators (FFR) is unknown. These FFRs could also contribute to fomite-based transmission of nosocomial infections if worn for extended use between patient rooms.

Methods: Filtration performance of N95 FFR fabric swatches was assessed after various levels of HOCl exposure. N95 swatches were then contaminated with 10Escherichia coli or 10Staphylococci aureus and treated with HOCl solution, 70% ethyl alcohol, or normal saline. Surviving bacterial numbers were assessed by plate counts.

Results: The size-dependent filtration efficiency of HOCl-sprayed N95 FFR fabric ranged from 96% to 100%, showing no significant change. Flow resistance testing revealed almost no change compared to control. Submersion in HOCl, but not spraying, had an excellent bactericidal effect on contaminated swatches.

Discussion: The role of the outer hydrophobic layer of N95 FFRs is discussed regarding the effects of HOCl on filtration and bacterial decontamination.

Conclusions: N95 material, sprayed with or briefly submerged in HOCl, maintained its filtration function. HOCl delivery by spray pump, however, would not accomplish decontamination of extended use FFRs between patient encounters. HOCl submersion of intact FFRs, contaminated with various hospital pathogens, is worth further study.

Objective: This study investigated the associations among endodontic instruments, ultrasonic tips and various final irrigation protocols for removing intracanal and intratubular biofilms in long oval canals.

Methodology: One hundred mandibular premolars inoculated with Enterococcus faecalis were divided into two groups: the control group (CG: n = 10), which received no treatment; and the test groups (n = 30), which included saline (SS), sodium hypochlorite (2.5% NaOCl) and chlorhexidine (2% CHX).

: This systematic review aimed to compare the effect of chitosan in smear layer removal with other commonly used chelators during root canal treatment. : The PRISMA guidelines were followed. Ex vivo studies performed in non-endodontically treated extracted human permanent teeth with a fully formed apex, in which sodium hypochlorite was the main irrigant and chitosan was used as final irrigation to observe its capacity to remove the smear layer using a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), were included.

Oxidative stress is universal to all cell types, including cancer. It is elicited by a surplus of reactive oxygen species (ROS) or a reduced cellular ability to defend against those. At low levels (oxidative eustress), this induces altered cellular signaling, while at higher levels (oxidative distress), cellular toxicity and non-specific redox signaling become apparent.

Hypochlorite anion (ClO) is closely associated with cancer development and progression, necessitating precise monitoring of ClO in tumor sites, and Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2 is highly expressed in tumor cells. So we rationally designed two ClO-specific responsive fluorescent probes COX2-ClO1 and COX2-ClO2, using indomethacin (IMC) as the COX-2 targeting moiety and methylene blue as fluorophore unit. Both probes exhibited high selectivity and sensitivity towards ClO in the in vitro solution assays and possess excellent biocompatibility in cellular experiments.

Low-Concentration Hypochlorous Acid Drinking Water Alleviates Broiler Gut Microbial Load While Preserving Overall Growth Performance.

January 2025

Key Laboratory of Feed Biotechnology, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of the People's Republic of China, Beijing 100081, China.

Hypochlorous acid has been attempted as an additive to animal drinking water in practical animal farming processes for water microbial quality control. Despite its potential, there is still a knowledge gap concerning the effects of hypochlorous acid on both poultry growth performance and gut microbial load. To address this gap, an animal study was conducted using flow cytometry to quantify the age-related microbial load in broiler manure and gut contents.
