We perform magnetotransport experiments on VI multilayers to investigate the relation between ferromagnetism in bulk and in exfoliated layers. The magnetoconductance measured on field-effect transistors and tunnel barriers shows that the Curie temperature of exfoliated multilayers is = 57 K, larger than in bulk ( = 50 K). Below ≈ 40 K, we observe an unusual evolution of the tunneling magnetoconductance, analogous to the phenomenology observed in bulk. Comparing the magnetoconductance measured for fields applied in- or out-of-plane corroborates the analogy, allows us to determine that the orientation of the eas-axis in multilayers is similar to that in bulk, and suggests that the in-plane component of the magnetization points in different directions in different layers. Besides establishing that the magnetic state of bulk and multilayers are similar, our experiments illustrate the complementarity of magnetotransport and magneto-optical measurements to probe magnetism in 2D materials.

Thin films fabricated from solution-processed graphene nanosheets are of considerable technological interest for a wide variety of applications, such as transparent conductors, supercapacitors, and memristors. However, very thin printed films tend to have low conductivity compared to thicker ones. In this work, we demonstrate a simple layer-by-layer deposition method which yields thin films of highly-aligned, electrochemically-exfoliated graphene which have low roughness and nanometer-scale thickness control.

Kaolinite is a single 2D layer of kaolin or metakaolin (MK), common clays that can be characterized as layered 3D materials. We show that because of its chemical composition, kaolinite can be converted into an amorphous 3D material by chemical means. This dimensional transformation is possible due to the large surface to volume ratio and chemical reactivity of kaolinite.

Article Synopsis
  • Transition metal oxides, like MnO, show great promise as anodes for flexible electrodes but face challenges such as low conductivity and poor cycling performance.
  • A new method called "spontaneous complexation and exfoliation" creates flexible thin-film electrodes using MnO nanocrystals and reduced graphene oxide (rGO), improving their mechanical flexibility and lithium-ion storage capacity.
  • The resulting flexible anodes deliver around 1220 mAh/g over 1000 cycles with high-rate capacity, while maintaining performance even under bending, highlighting their potential for advanced energy storage solutions.

Photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting has attracted significant interest as a promising approach for producing clean and sustainable hydrogen fuel. An efficient photoanode is critical for enhancing PEC water splitting. Bismuth vanadate (BiVO) is a widely recognized photoanode for PEC applications due to its visible light absorption, suitable valence band position for water oxidation, and outstanding potential for modifications.

The direct incorporation of borondipyrromethene (BODIPY) subunits into the structural backbone of covalent organic frameworks (COFs) gives facile access to porous photosensitizers but is still a challenging task. Here, we introduce β‑ketoenamine-linked BDP‑TFP‑COF, which crystallizes in AA‑stacking mode with hcb topology. A comprehensive characterization reveals high crystallinity and enhanced stability in a variety of solvents, excellent mesoporosity (SABET = 1042 m2 g-1), broad light absorption in the visible region, and red emission upon the exfoliation of few-layer COF nanosheets.
