Background: It is important to identify patients at increased risk of worsening of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) after a myocardial infarction (MI). We aimed to identify the association of various potential biomarkers with LVEF impairment after an MI in South American patients.

Methods: We studied adult patients admitted to a University Hospital and diagnosed with an acute MI. Plasma concentrations of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9), N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and heart-type fatty-acid-binding protein (FABP3) were determined in samples drawn shortly after the event. Participants had a follow-up visit at least 45 days after the event. The primary endpoint was defined as any decline in LVEF at follow-up relative to baseline.

Results: The study included 106 patients (77.4% men, 22.6% women), mean age was 64.1, mean baseline LVEF was 56.6, 19% had a prior MI. We obtained a follow-up evaluation in 100 (94.4%) of participants, mean follow-up time was 163 days. There was a significant correlation between baseline PCSK9 and hsCRP (r = 0.39, p < 0.001). Baseline hsCRP concentrations were higher in patients who developed the endpoint than in those who did not (32.1 versus 21.2 mg/L, p = 0.066). After multivariate adjustment, baseline PCSK9, male sex and age were significantly associated with impairment in LVEF. The absolute change in LVEF was inversely correlated with baseline hsCRP (standardized coefficient = - 0.246, p = 0.004).

Conclusion: High plasma levels of PCSK9 and hsCRP were associated with early decreases in LVEF after an MI in Latin American patients.

This study aimed to evaluate the association between the triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (hsCAR) and the prognosis of patients with STEMI and hypertension. A total of 699 patients diagnosed with STEMI and hypertension were included in this study database. Compared to the low TyG index group (< 7.

Article Synopsis
  • Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a type of low-density lipoprotein linked to a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, with high levels primarily determined by genetics and lacking effective treatments.
  • A case study of a 67-year-old vegan male showed that after a 10-day water-only fast followed by a 6-week diet free of salt, oil, and sugar, he saw significant drops in his blood pressure, total cholesterol, and Lp(a) levels.
  • His decrease in Lp(a) by 39% was notable, suggesting that such dietary interventions could be a promising alternative for managing high Lp(a) and reducing cardiovascular risk, particularly among vegans, although more research is needed.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the rapid progression of non-target lesions (NTLs) following percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and its link to increased cardiac events, aiming to identify risk factors and develop a prediction model for this progression.
  • It analyzes data from 1,250 patients, using machine learning to determine important risk factors like LDL-c, hs-CRP, IL-8, and sIL-2R, and finds that these factors can help predict NTL progression post-PCI.
  • The results suggest that PCSK9 inhibitors might reduce rapid NTL progression partially through their effect on LDL-c, with initial evidence indicating potential mediation from IL-8 and sIL-2R as well.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an ever-evolving set of diseases that poses a serious health risk in many countries worldwide. Existing evidence illustrates that individuals with MetS have a 30%-40% higher chance of acquiring type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), or both. This study was undertaken to uncover the regulatory role of natural organosulfur compounds (OSCs), S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC), and S-ethyl-L-cysteine (SEC), in targeting high carbohydrate high fat (HCHF)-diet-induced MetS-associated risk management.

Hypercholesterolemia is characterized by elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol levels and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. The adipokine chemerin is an additional risk factor. Here we investigated whether cholesterol-lowering with statins or proprotein convertase subtilisin-kexin type 9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) affects chemerin.
