This paper describes a new strategy using oxygen plasma treatment to tune the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of gold nanorods coated with a mesoporous silica shell (AuNRs@SiO) exposed to mercury (Hg) solution. Dark-field (DF) microscopy and spectroscopy were used to reveal the effects of oxygen plasma treatment on the structural and LSPR spectral changes of single amalgamated AuNRs@SiO. Due to the structural stability provided by the mesoporous silica shell, the amalgamated AuNRs@SiO exposed to oxygen plasma treatment showed no morphological transformation. Furthermore, real-time monitoring of single AuNRs@SiO showed slow Hg inward diffusion into AuNR cores in air over a long timeframe (24 h), as revealed by the redshift and linewidth narrowing of the LSPR peak. However, the oxygen plasma treatment resulted in faster inward diffusion of Hg into AuNR cores within 20 min, almost 60 times faster than the amalgamated AuNRs@SiO untreated with oxygen plasma. Thus, oxygen plasma treatment was further presented as a new effective approach to control the LSPR properties by promoting the inward Hg diffusion in amalgamated AuNRs@SiO without structural deformation.

Bladder cancer often recurs, necessitating innovative treatments to reduce recurrence. We investigated non-thermal plasma's potential as a novel anti-cancer therapy, focusing on plasma-activated solution (PAS), created by exposing saline to non-thermal plasma. Our study aims to elucidate the biological effects of PAS on bladder cancer cell lines in vitro, as well as the combination with mitomycin C (MMC), using clinically relevant settings.

Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has been utilized in various medical devices using its oxidative nature. Recent studies have provided evidence that CAP can facilitate the delivery of large, hydrophilic molecules through the epidermis to the dermis. On the other hand, a new approach called low-intensity CAP (LICAP) has been developed, allowing the plasma level to be controlled within a subtoxic range, thereby demonstrating various biological benefits without tissue damage.

Testicular ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury during testicular torsion is strongly influenced by oxidative stress caused by excessive accumulation of unscavenged reactive oxygen species. This study aimed to investigate the effects of intra-peritoneal administration of Mito-TEMPO (MT) on I/R injury in testicular torsion/detorsion (T/D) in mice. Forty-two male mice were divided into seven groups including 1 control and 6 treatment groups (360° T/D, 720° T/D, 360° T/D + 0.

The cooling procedure markedly diminishes the quality of guinea pig () sperms, primarily because their membranes are highly susceptible to this process. This susceptibility triggers the generation of reactive oxygen species and free radicals, ultimately leading to lipid peroxidation in the sperm membrane. Surprisingly, there has been a lack of research on the use of Tris-based extenders to safeguard guinea pig sperm under refrigeration conditions.

Multicomponent Ti-containing ultra-high temperature ceramics (UHTCs) have emerged as more promising ablation-resistant materials than typical UHTCs for applications above 2000 °C. However, the underlying mechanism of Ti improving the ablation performance is still obscure. Here, (Hf,Zr,Ti)B coatings are fabricated by supersonic atmospheric plasma spraying, and the effects of Ti content on the ablation performance under an oxyacetylene flame are investigated.
