In this paper we present a new algorithm for splitting (partial) human mitogenomes into components with high similarity to haplogroup motifs of Phylotree. The algorithm reads a (partial) mitogenome coded by the differences to the reference (rCRS) and outputs the estimated haplogroups of the putative components. The algorithm requires no special information on the raw data of the sequencing process and is therefore suited for the post hoc analysis of mixtures of any sequencing technology. The software EMMA 2 implementing the algorithm will be made available via the EMPOP (https://empop.online) database and extends the nine years old software EMMA for haplogrouping single mitogenomes to mixtures with at most three components.

This prospective observational study aimed to compare abdominal hysterectomy (AH), vaginal hysterectomy (VH), and total laparoscopic hysterectomy (TLH) in terms of oxidative stress (OS) by measuring serum levels of total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidant status (TOS), and oxidative stress index (OSI). Of the 3 groups, namely, AH, VH, and TLH, 22 patients were enrolled in each to investigate the aim of the study mentioned above. Patient demographics, clinical and surgical characteristics, and preoperative and postoperative (0th and 24th hours) serum TAS, TOS, and OSI levels were investigated.

Effect of bar jump height on kinetics and kinematics of take-off in agility dogs.

PLoS One

Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Department of Equine and Small Animal Medicine, University of Helsinki, Helsinki, Finland.

Sport-related injuries have been reported to occur in around one-third of agility dogs. Higher bar height in competitions has been shown to increase odds of an injury. This study evaluated the effect of bar height on the kinetics and kinematics at take-off to a bar jump.

Carbon stock quantification and climate mitigation potential of a tropical moist forest in Ethiopia.

PLoS One

January 2025

Cooperative Agricultural Research Center, College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources, Prairie View A&M University, Prairie View, TX, United States of America.

The significance of forests in absorbing and storing carbon plays a crucial role in international greenhouse gas policies outlined by the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCC). This study was conducted in a typical tropical moist forest of Ethiopia to assess its carbon stock, a critical issue in climate policy. The study domain was divided into six strata using elevation criteria.

Translational validity of mouse models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) is variable. Because change in weight is a well-documented precursor of AD, we investigated whether diversity of human AD risk weight phenotypes was evident in a longitudinally characterized cohort of 1,196 female and male humanized APOE (hAPOE) mice, monitored up to 28 months of age which is equivalent to 81 human years. Autoregressive Hidden Markov Model (AHMM) incorporating age, sex, and APOE genotype was employed to identify emergent weight trajectories and phenotypes.

Context: Trabecular bone score (TBS), a gray-level texture index derived from lumbar spine (LS) dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scans, is decreased in patients with diabetes and is associated with increased fracture risk, independent of areal bone mineral density (aBMD), but potentially influenced by abdominal fat tissue.

Objective: Evaluate effect of romosozumab (210 mg monthly) for 12 months followed by alendronate (70 mg weekly) for 24 months vs alendronate alone (70 mg weekly) for 36 months on LS aBMD and TBS in women with type 2 diabetes (T2D) enrolled in the ARCH study.

Methods: This post hoc analysis included women from ARCH who had T2D at baseline and LS DXA scans at baseline and ≥1 postbaseline visit (romosozumab-to-alendronate, n = 165; alendronate-to-alendronate, n = 195).
