-Half-sandwich complexes of the group 14 elements germanium, tin and lead are reported, which represent a new class of Lewis amphiphilic tetrylenes and bridge the gap between classical N-heterocyclic systems and group 14 metallocenes. These compounds can form complexes both with carbenes and transition metal fragments.

The chemical reactivity between benzene and the "naked" acyclic carbene-like (G13X) species, having two bulky N-heterocyclic boryloxy ligands at the Group 13 center, was theoretically assessed using density functional theory computations. Our theoretical studies show that (BX) preferentially undergoes C-H bond insertion with benzene, both kinetically and thermodynamically, whereas the (AlX) analogue favors a reversible [4 + 1] cycloaddition. Conversely, the heavier carbene analogues ((GaX), (InX), and (TlX)) are not expected to engage in a reaction with benzene.

Selective Hydrogen Isotope Exchange Catalysed by Simple Alkali-Metal Bases in DMSO.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

Universitat Bern, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Freiestrasse 3, 3012, Bern, SWITZERLAND.

Isotope Exchange processes are becoming the preferred way to prepare isotopically labelled molecules, avoiding the redesign of multistep synthetic protocols. In the case of deuterium incorporation, the most used strategy has employed transition metals, that offer high reactivity under mild reaction conditions. Despite their success, the trade-off is that these metals are precious, and often exhibit high toxicity.

Isolation of a NHC-stabilized heavier nitrile and its conversion into an isonitrile analogue.

Nitriles (R-C≡N) have been investigated since the late eighteenth century and are ubiquitous encounters in organic and inorganic syntheses. In contrast, heavier nitriles, which contain the heavier analogues of carbon and nitrogen, are sparsely investigated species. Here we report the synthesis and isolation of a phosphino-silylene featuring an N-heterocyclic carbene-phosphinidene and a highly sterically demanding silyl group as substituents.

Carbene-Stabilized Phosphagermylenylidene: A Heavier Analog of Isonitrile.

Phosphagermylenylidenes (R-P═Ge), as heavier analogs of isonitriles, whether in their free state or as complexes with a Lewis base, have not been previously identified as isolable entities. In this study, we report the synthesis of a stable monomeric phosphagermylenylidene within the coordination sphere of a Lewis base under ambient conditions. This species was synthesized by Lewis base-induced dedimerization of a cyclic phosphagermylenylidene dimer or via MeSiCl elimination from a phosphinochlorogermylene framework.

The stable ferrocene-based N-heterocyclic silylenes fc[(N{B})Si] (A; fc=1,1'-ferrocenylene, {B}=(HCNDipp)B, Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl) and fc[(NDipp)Si] (B) are compared in a study focussing on their reactivity towards a range of small to moderately sized molecular substrates, viz. P, S, Se, MesN (Mes=mesityl), RC≡CH, and RC≡CR (R=Ph, SiMe). The Dipp-substituted congener B exhibits a more pronounced ambiphilicity and is sterically less congested than its 1,3,2-diazaborolyl-substituted relative A, in line with the higher reactivity of the former.
