The absorption, translocation, and biotransformation behaviors of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and diesters (OPdEs) in a hydroponic system were investigated. The lateral root was found as the main accumulation and biotransformation place of OPEs and OPdEs in lettuce. The nontarget analysis using high-resolution mass spectrometry revealed five hydroxylated metabolites and five conjugating metabolites in the OPE exposure group, among which methylation, acetylation, and palmitoyl conjugating OPEs were reported as metabolites for the first time. Particularly, methylation on phosphate can be a significant process for plant metabolism, and methyl diphenyl phosphate (MDPP) accounted for the majority of metabolites. The translocation factor values of most identified OPE metabolites are negatively associated with their predicted logarithmic octanol-water partitioning coefficient (log ) values (0.75-2.45), indicating that hydrophilicity is a dominant factor in the translocation of OPE metabolites in lettuce. In contrast, palmitoyl conjugation may lead to an enhanced acropetal translocation and those with log  values < 0 may have limited translocation potential. Additionally, OPE diesters produced from the biotransformation of OPEs in lettuce showed a higher acropetal translocation potential than those exposed directly. These results further emphasize the necessity to consider biotransformation as an utmost important factor in the accumulation and acropetal translocation potential of OPEs in plants.

The selection of an appropriate and targeted crop protection technology for winter oilseed rape is crucial for the economic production of this crop. Insecticides belonging to the group of diamides and butenolides are available as seed treatments for winter oilseed rape and serve as effective tools for chemical crop protection. The objective of this study was to determine the multi-directional applicability of the active ingredients cyantraniliprole and flupyradifurone.

Article Synopsis
  • Tire additives known as benzothiazole (BTs) are emitted into agricultural environments, and their uptake and metabolism in food crops, particularly in carrots, were evaluated to understand their behavior.
  • Carrot plants readily absorbed BTs through their roots, but the upward movement to leaves was limited, with variations in translocation efficiency based on the specific BT structure.
  • High-resolution mass spectrometry identified 18 novel BT metabolites in carrots, highlighting that transformation mainly occurs through glycosylation and amino acid conjugation, leading to structure-specific metabolic processes.

Structure-Dependent Distribution, Metabolism, and Toxicity Effects of Alkyl Organophosphate Esters in Lettuce ( L.).

Article Synopsis
  • * It identifies 14 new breakdown products of OPEs and finds that smaller OPEs are less likely to change in chemical structure, while larger ones undergo more complex transformations, particularly hydroxylation.
  • * The research shows that some modified metabolites of OPEs are more toxic to lettuce than their parent compounds, emphasizing the importance of considering these metabolites when assessing the environmental risks of using OPEs.

National-Regional Joint Engineering Research Center for Soil Pollution Control and Remediation in South China, Guangdong Key Laboratory of Integrated Agro-environmental Pollution Control and Management, Institute of Eco-environmental and Soil Sciences, Guangdong Academy of Sciences, Guangzhou 510650, China.

This study investigated the uptake pathways, acropetal translocation, subcellular distribution, and biotransformation of OPEs by rice ( L.) after Cu exposure. The symplastic pathway was noted as the major pathway for the uptake of organophosphate triesters (tri-OPEs) and diesters (di-OPEs) by rice roots.

Background And Aims: Clonal growth is widespread among herbaceous plants, and helps them to cope with environmental heterogeneity through resource integration via connecting clonal organs. Such integration is considered to balance heterogeneity by translocation of resources from rich to poor patches. However, such an 'equalization' strategy is only one of several possible strategies.
