Objective: Brown adipose tissue (BAT) dissipates chemical energy to protect against obesity. In the present study, we aimed to determine the effects of Erchen decoction on the lipolysis and thermogenesis function of BAT in high-fat diet-fed rats.

Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly divided into four groups, which were fed a control diet (C) or a high-fat diet (HF), and the latter was administered with high and low doses of Erchen decoction by gavage once a day, for 12 weeks. Body weight, the serum lipid profile, serum glucose, and insulin levels of the rats were evaluated. In addition, the phosphorylation and protein and mRNA expression of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), adipose triglyceride lipase (ATGL), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor coactivator- (PGC-) 1, and uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) in BAT were measured by immunoblotting and RT-PCR.

Results: Erchen decoction administration decreased body weight gain and ameliorated the abnormal lipid profile and insulin resistance index of the high-fat diet-fed rats. In addition, the expression of p-AMPK and ATGL in the was significantly increased by Erchen decoction. Erchen decoction also increased the protein and mRNA expression of PGC-1 and UCP-1 in BAT.

Conclusion: Erchen decoction ameliorates the metabolic abnormalities of high-fat diet-fed rats, at least in part activation of lipolysis and thermogenesis in BAT.

Hyperlipidemia, commonly referred to as dyslipidemia, is characterized by elevated serum cholesterol and/or triglyceride levels. This condition contributes significantly to the high mortality rates associated with cardiovascular diseases, posing a serious threat to global health. Although statins remain the predominant pharmacological treatment for hyperlipidemia, their associated side effects have led to a growing interest in alternative therapeutic approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how Cangzhu Erchen decoction (CZECD) helps treat chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) by using advanced techniques like microarray analysis, network pharmacology, and molecular docking to understand the underlying molecular mechanisms.
  • - Researchers identified 140 compounds from CZECD and over 5,100 COPD-related targets, pinpointing key targets like SRC, PIK3CA, and STAT3 that contribute to CZECD's anti-COPD effects.
  • - Functional analyses showed CZECD influences processes such as protein phosphorylation and inflammation, primarily through key pathways like cancer and PI3K/AKT, reaffirmed by molecular docking results that demonstrated strong interactions between the compounds and targets.*

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the effects of a combination of two Chinese herbal medicines, Erchen decoction and Huiyanzhuyu decoction (EHD), on laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC), aiming to understand the mechanisms behind their therapeutic success.
  • Researchers utilized online databases and various analytical tools to identify active components, key targets, and pathways involved in EHD's treatment of LSCC, while also validating their findings with clinical samples and experiments.
  • The analysis revealed 116 overlapping targets and identified significant protein clusters, suggesting potential key genes that play critical roles in the therapeutic effects of EHD on LSCC.

This study investigated the effect of Erchen Decoction(ECD) on the prevention of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) in mice and explored its possible mechanism, so as to provide scientific data for the clinical application of ECD in the prevention of NASH. C57BL/6 male mice were randomly divided into normal group(methionine and choline supplement, MCS), model group(methionine and choline deficient, MCD), low-dose ECD group(ECD_L, 6 g·kg~(-1)), medium-dose ECD group(ECD_M, 12 g·kg~(-1)), and high-dose ECD group(ECD_H, 24 g·kg~(-1)), with eight mice in each group. The MCS group was fed with an MCS diet, and the other groups were fed with an MCD diet.

This study aims to investigate the effect of Erchen Decoction(ECD) on liver mitochondrial function in mice with a high-fat diet and its possible mechanism. A total of sixty C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into a normal group, high-fat group, ECD group, mTORC1 activator(MHY) group, ECD+MHY group, and polyene phosphatidyl choline(PPC) group, with 10 rats in each group. The normal group was given a normal diet, and the other groups were fed a high-fat diet for 20 weeks.
