An epidemiological transition in the prevalence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) is taking place especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where an ageing population and adoption of western lifestyles are associated with an increase in PAD. We discuss the limited evidence which suggests that infection, potentially mediated by inflammation, may be a risk factor for PAD, and show by means of an ecological analysis that country-level prevalence of the major endemic infections of HIV, tuberculosis and malaria are associated with the prevalence of PAD. While further research is required, we propose that scientists and health authorities pay more attention to the interplay between communicable and non-communicable diseases, and we suggest that limiting the occurrence of endemic infections might have some effect on slowing the epidemiological transition in PAD.

Prehosp Emerg Care
January 2025
Toronto Paramedic Services, City of Toronto, Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Objectives: Paramedic services face increasing challenges due to delays in patient transfer of care (TOC) at emergency departments (EDs). Prolonged TOC times directly impact paramedic services' ability to provide emergency response, though the patient and clinical factors contributing to these delays remain unclear. We examined TOC times for all transports to the ED and analyzed factors associated with prolonged TOC.

Background: Benign breast disease (BBD) increases breast cancer (BC) risk progressively for women diagnosed with non-proliferative (NP) change, proliferative disease without atypia (PDWA), and atypical hyperplasia (AH). Leveraging data from 18,704 women in the Mayo BBD Cohort (1967-2013), we evaluated temporal trends in BBD diagnoses and how they have influenced associated BC risk over four decades.
Methods: BC risk trends associated with BBD were evaluated using standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) and age-period-cohort modeling across four eras-pre-mammogram (1967-1981), pre-core needle biopsy (CNB) (1982-1992), transition to CNB (1993-2001), and CNB era (2002-2013).
Background: N-terminal brain natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) is a marker of cardiac health and a strong predictor of mortality, incident cardiovascular disease (CVD), and sudden cardiac death in community populations. A link between the menopause transition (MT), sex hormones, and NTproBNP has been suggested, though, no studies have formally examined how NTproBNP changes over the MT. In addition of being a marker of cardiac health, studies suggest NTproBNP to be related to cognitive performance, yet those studies have not considered the MT.

Background: Although ethnic and cultural aspects can influence health behaviors, no studies have compared views about dementia and brain health between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people living in the same territory. Therefore, we contrasted beliefs and knowledge about dementia risk reduction between Indigenous (Mapuche) and non-Indigenous older adults in Chile.
Method: An exploratory qualitative study was conducted with people 60 years and older, self-identified as Mapuche ('people of the land') or non-Mapuche, with no dementia.

Background: Social restrictions and closures of services due to COVID-19 pandemic had a negative impact on the social inclusion and well-being of older people. In fact, older adults present risk factors both in terms of health - such as frailty or multimorbidity - and in terms of quality of life - for example institutionalization - and poor social support. The main objective is to evaluate whether social support had the role of an effect modifier on the incidence of cognitive frailty.
