Navigating the Statistical Minefield of Model Selection and Clustering in Neuroscience.

Model selection is often implicit: when performing an ANOVA, one assumes that the normal distribution is a good model of the data; fitting a tuning curve implies that an additive and a multiplicative scaler describes the behavior of the neuron; even calculating an average implicitly assumes that the data were sampled from a distribution that has a finite first statistical moment: the mean. Model selection may be explicit, when the aim is to test whether one model provides a better description of the data than a competing one. As a special case, clustering algorithms identify groups with similar properties within the data. They are widely used from spike sorting to cell type identification to gene expression analysis. We discuss model selection and clustering techniques from a statistician's point of view, revealing the assumptions behind, and the logic that governs the various approaches. We also showcase important neuroscience applications and provide suggestions how neuroscientists could put model selection algorithms to best use as well as what mistakes should be avoided.

Exposure to vanadium (V) occurs through the ingestion of contaminated water, polluted soil, V-containing foods and medications, and the toxicity and absorption during the small intestine phase after oral ingestion play crucial roles in the ultimate health hazards posed by V. In this study, the human colon adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells were selected as an intestinal absorption model to investigate the uptake and cytotoxicity of vanadyl sulfate (VOSO) and sodium orthovanadate (NaVO). Our results confirmed the cytotoxic effects of V(IV) and V(V) and revealed a greater toxicity of V(IV) than V(V) towards Caco-2 cells.

Dental maxillary sinus pathology: a CBCT-based case-control study.

This study evaluated the association between dental infection and maxillary sinus pathology, and the influence of age, sex, type of tooth, root proximity to the sinus floor, the condition of the primary maxillary ostium, and the presence of an accessory maxillary ostium in this process. Computed Tomography scans were selected, and upper posterior teeth were evaluated for the presence of apical periodontitis (AP), bone loss with furcation involvement, and endoperiodontal lesion (EPL), subsequently, sinuses were evaluated for mucosal thickening (MT) and opacification of the maxillary sinus (OMS). Logistic regression models were constructed, and Chi-squared and Fisher's tests were applied.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) significantly influence tumor progression and therapeutic resistance in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the distributions and functions of CAF subpopulations vary across the four consensus molecular subtypes (CMSs) of CRC. This study performed single-cell RNA and bulk RNA sequencing and revealed that myofibroblast-like CAFs (myCAFs), tumor-like CAFs (tCAFs), inflammatory CAFs (iCAFs), CXCL14CAFs, and MTCAFs are notably enriched in CMS4 compared with other CMSs of CRC.
