The mammalian cerebral cortex represents one of the most recent and astonishing inventions of nature, responsible of a large diversity of functions that range from sensory processing to high-order cognitive abilities, such as logical reasoning or language. Decades of dedicated study have contributed to our current understanding of this structure, both at structural and functional levels. A key feature of the neocortex is its outstanding richness in cell diversity, composed by multiple types of long-range projecting neurons and locally connecting interneurons. In this review, we will describe the great diversity of interneurons that constitute local neocortical circuits and summarize the mechanisms underlying their development and their assembly into functional networks.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a progressive and multifactorial neurodegenerative disease that still has no cure. Different pathological processes contribute to the disease's development, such as the presence of amyloid beta (Aβ) plaques, neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), glutamatergic excitotoxicity, oxidative stress, and neuroinflammation. Chalcones are polyphenolic compounds of natural origin with a wide range of biological activities, and emerging studies have reported neurotrophic activity, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, and the inhibition of Aβ aggregation.

Background: Data from high-income countries (HICs) suggest a decline in age-specific incidence rates of dementia. However, this has happened primarily in HICs, with low- and middle- income countries (LMICs) facing two main challenges: a higher burden of risk factors and, in general, a faster ageing population. Most people with dementia live in LMICs, and this is set to increase, thus requiring urgent and robust action to prevent, treat and support people with dementia and their families.
