In a series of experiments on the migration of the antioxidant Irganox 1010 from ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) films into food-simulating liquids and foods, the antioxidant was found to migrate rapidly from EVA film into n-heptane, 100% ethanol and corn oil. The rate of migration into these media was greater from EVA than from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) under comparable conditions. In contrast, little migration of Irganox 1010 was recorded on exposure of the EVA film to aqueous media, whereas migration from LDPE into such media was relatively high.

The monitoring of legacy contaminants in sentinel northern marine mammals has revealed some of the highest concentrations globally. However, investigations into the presence of chemicals of emerging Arctic concern (CEACs) and other lesser-known chemicals are rarely conducted, if at all. Here, we used a nontarget/suspect approach to screen for thousands of different chemicals, including many CEACs and plastic-related compounds (PRCs) in blubber/adipose from killer whales (Orcinus orca), narwhals (Monodon monoceros), long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas), and polar bears (Ursus maritimus) in East Greenland.

Ordering takeout is a growing social phenomenon and may raise public health concerns. However, the associated health risk of compounds leaching from plastic packaging is unknown due to the lack of chemical and toxicity data. In this study, 20 chemical candidates were tentatively identified in the environmentally relevant leachate from plastic containers through the nontargeted chemical analysis.

Rationale: Matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (MALDI-MSI) typically requires sample preparation such as sectioning and spraying of the matrix. Sample transfer using a Pt-coated porous plate formed of glass beads simplifies preparation and enables reproducible MSI measurements.
Methods: The surface of a sintered-glass-bead porous plate was coated with Pt on one side of the plate.
