Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures-in which layered materials are purposely selected to assemble with each other-allow unusual properties and different phenomena to be combined and multifunctional electronics to be created, opening a new chapter for the spread of internet-of-things applications. Here, an O -ultrasensitive MoTe material and an O -insensitive SnS material are integrated to form a vdW heterostructure, allowing the realization of charge-polarity control for multioperation-mode transistors through a simple and effective rapid thermal annealing strategy under dry-air and vacuum conditions. The charge-polarity control (i.e., doping and de-doping processes), which arises owing to the interaction between O adsorption/desorption and tellurium defects at the MoTe surface, means that the MoTe /SnS heterostructure transistors can reversibly change between unipolar, ambipolar, and anti-ambipolar transfer characteristics. Based on the dynamic control of the charge-polarity properties, an inverter, output polarity controllable amplifier, p-n diode, and ternary-state logics (NMIN and NMAX gates) are demonstrated, which inspire the development of reversibly multifunctional devices and indicates the potential of 2D materials.

Efficient energy conversion using ions as carriers necessitates membranes that sustain high permselectivity in high salinity conditions, which presents a significant challenge. This study addresses the issue by manipulating the linkages in covalent-organic-framework membranes, altering the distribution of electrostatic potentials and thereby influencing the short-range interactions between ions and membranes. We show that a charge-neutral covalent-organic-framework membrane with β-ketoenamine linkages achieves record permselectivity in high salinity environments.

Enhanced electric field and charge polarity modulate the microencapsulation and stability of electrosprayed probiotic cells ( ST44).

Curr Res Food Sci

October 2023

Technical University of Denmark, DTU-Food, Research Group for Food Production Engineering, Lab. of Nano-BioScience, B202, 2800, Kgs Lyngby, Denmark.

The effect of the polarity of the direct current electric field on the "organization" of (ST44) probiotic cells within electrosprayed maltodextrin microcapsules was investigated. The generated electrostatic forces between the negatively surface-charged probiotic cells and the applied negative polarity on the electrospray nozzle, allowed to control the location of the cells towards the core of the electrosprayed microcapsules. This "organization" of the cells increased the evaporation of the solvent (water) and successively the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the electrosprayed microcapsules.

Charge Polarity Control in Organic Transistors of Mixed and Segregated Complexes Based on Diaminonaphthalene and Pyrene.

Organic cocrystals of diaminonaphthalene (DAN) and diaminopyrene (DAP) with bromanil (BA) and tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) are an exemplar system for understanding the charge-transport process, where from the viewpoint of partition theory, orbital symmetry plays a crucial role in controlling the carrier charge polarity of transistors. In the mixed-stack complexes of BA and other -quinone acceptors, a comparatively weak donor, 1,5-DAN, shows p-channel characteristics owing to the counteractive contribution of the next highest occupied molecular orbital for electron transport. This characteristic behavior occurs because the BA molecule, situated on top of the amino group, overlaps with half of the DAN molecule.

In this study, we present nanofluidic diodes fabricated from straight glass nanochannels and functionalized using bio-inspired polydopamine (PDA) and poly-L-lysine (PLL) coatings. The resulting PDA coatings are shown to be asymmetric due to a combination of transport considerations which can be leveraged to provide a measure of control over the effective channel geometry. By subsequently introducing a layer of amine-bearing PLL chains covalently bound to the PDA, we enhance heterogeneities in the charge and ion distributions within the channel and enable significant current rectification between forward-bias and reverse-bias modes; our PDA-PLL-coated channels yielded a rectification ratio greater than 1000 in a 100 nm channel filled with 0.

Based on the charge-polarity control, a novel anti-ambipolar heterotransistor is proposed based on a special InSe&WSe van der Waals heterostructure. Unlike traditional logic transistors, our anti-ambipolar heterotransistor can treat an optical signal as an input to change its operating state, that is, with the switching of the optical signal, it shows a reversible polarity change between anti-ambipolar and P-type. Moreover, with the increase of laser power density from 0 to 4.
