The COVID-19 pandemic and the degree of persistence of US stock prices and bond yields.

Published: November 2022

This paper analyses the possible effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on the degree of persistence of US monthly stock prices and bond yields using fractional integration techniques. The model is estimated first over the period January 1966-December 2020 and then a recursive approach is taken to examine whether or not persistence has changed during the following pandemic period (up to February 2021). We find that the unit root hypothesis cannot be rejected for stock prices while for bond yields the results differ depending on the maturity date and the specification of the error term. In general, bond yields appear to be more persistent, although there is evidence of mean reversion in case of 1-year yields under the assumption of autocorrelated errors. The recursive analysis shows no impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the persistence of stock prices, whilst there is an increase in the case of both 10- and 1- year bond yields but not of their spread.

An Automated Workflow to Discover the Structure-Stability Relations for Radiation Hard Molecular Semiconductors.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Institute of Materials for Electronics and Energy Technology (i-MEET), Department of Materials Science and Engineering, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU), Martensstraße 7, 91058 Erlangen, Germany.

Emerging photovoltaics for outer space applications are one of the many examples where radiation hard molecular semiconductors are essential. However, due to a lack of general design principles, their resilience against extra-terrestrial high-energy radiation can currently not be predicted. In this work, the discovery of radiation hard materials is accelerated by combining the strengths of high-throughput, lab automation and machine learning.

Thiol-Ene Click Chemistry: A General Strategy for Tuning the Properties of Vinylene-Linked Covalent Organic Frameworks.

Vinylene-linked Covalent Organic Frameworks (V-2D-COFs) are a class of promising porous organic materials that feature fully π-conjugated structures, high crystallinity, ultrahigh chemical stability, and extraordinary optoelectronic properties. However, the types of reactions and the availability of monomers for synthesizing linked COFs are considerably limited by the irreversibility of the C═C bond, and the complete π-conjugated structure restricts their in-depth research in hydrophilicity, membrane materials, and proton conductivity. Postsynthetic modification (PSM), which can avoid these problems by incorporating functional moieties into the predetermined framework, provides an alternative way to construct diverse V-2D-COFs.

The proton bond is a pivotal chemical motif in many areas of science and technology. Its quantum chemical description is remarkably challenged by nuclear and charge delocalization effects and the fluxional perturbation that it induces on molecular substrates. This work seeks insights into proton bonding at sub-kelvin temperatures.

Photoinduced Regiodivergent and Enantioselective Cross-Coupling of Glycine Derivatives with Hydrocarbon Feedstocks.

J Am Chem Soc

Key Laboratory of Chemical Biology of Fujian Province, iChEM, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University, Xiamen, Fujian 361005, China.

Regiodivergent asymmetric synthesis represents a transformative strategy for the efficient generation of structurally diverse chiral products from a single set of starting materials, significantly enriching their enantiomeric composition. However, the design of radical-mediated regiodivergent and enantioselective reactions that can accommodate a wide range of functional groups and substrates has posed significant challenges. The obstacles primarily lie in switching the regioselectivity and achieving high enantiodiscrimination, especially when dealing with high-energy intermediates.

Selective Protein (Post-)modifications through Dynamic Covalent Chemistry: Self-activated SAr Reactions.

J Am Chem Soc

January 2025

Laboratoire de Chimie Supramoléculaire, Institut de Science et d'Ingénierie Supramoléculaires (ISIS), Université de Strasbourg, Strasbourg 67000, France.

SAr reactions were remarkably accelerated using a pretargeting and activating unit based on dynamic covalent chemistry (DCvC). A Cys attack at the C-F bond on the aromatic ring of salicylaldehyde derivatives was only observed upon iminium formation with a neighboring Lys residue of model small peptides. Such self-activation was ascribed to the stronger electron-withdrawing capability of the iminium bond with respect to that of the parent aldehyde that stabilized the transition state of the reaction, together with the higher preorganization of the reactive groups in the cationic aldiminium species.
