Rapid advancement in high-throughput sequencing and analytical approaches has seen a steady increase in the generation of genomic resources for helminth parasites. Now, helminth genomes and their annotations are a cornerstone of numerous efforts to compare genetic and transcriptomic variation, from single cells to populations of globally distributed parasites, to genome modifications to understand gene function. Our understanding of helminths is increasingly reliant on these genomic resources, which are primarily static once published and vary widely in quality and completeness between species. This article seeks to highlight the cause and effect of this variation and argues for the continued improvement of these genomic resources - even after their publication - which is necessary to provide a more accurate and complete understanding of the biology of these important pathogens.

Abies guatemalensis Rehder, an endangered conifer endemic to Central American highlands, is ecologically vital in upper montane forests. It faces threats from habitat fragmentation, unsustainable logging, and illegal Christmas tree harvesting. While previous genetic studies on mature trees from eighteen populations showed high within-population diversity and limited among-population differentiation, the genetic impact of recent anthropogenic pressures on younger generations has yet to be discovered.

Bacteriophages, known for their ability to kill bacteria, are hampered in their effectiveness because bacteria are able to rapidly develop resistance, thereby posing a significant challenge for the efficacy of phage therapy. The impact of evolutionary trajectories on the long-term success of phage therapy remains largely unclear. Herein, we conducted evolutionary experiments, genomic analysis, and CRISPR-mediated gene editing, to illustrate the evolutionary trajectory occurring between phages and their hosts.

Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease of cloven-hoofed animals. Together with other diseases highlighted in this special edition of the Scientific and Technical Review, the circulation of FMD virus in different parts of the world has shaped the work of the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) over the past hundred years. In 2012, the Global Framework for the Progressive Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases, led by WOAH and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, established a joint FMD working group and a strategy for the control of FMD.

Here we introduce AnnSQL, a Python package that constructs an AnnData-inspired database using the in-process DuckDb engine, enabling orders-of-magnitude performance enhancements for parsing single-cell genomics datasets with the ease of SQL. We highlight AnnSQL functionality and demonstrate transformative runtime improvements by comparing AnnData or AnnSQL operations on a 4.

However, creating high-quality genomic FMs from scratch is resource-intensive, requiring significant computational power and high-quality pre-training data. The success of large language models (LLMs) in NLP has largely been driven by industrial-scale efforts leveraging vast, diverse corpora and massive computing infrastructure.
