Parabens, bisphenols, and triclosan are used in many baby products, including pacifiers. However, the migration through oral saliva will result in a potential health risk. The present study proposes a sensitive and simple method for the analysis of these chemicals in saliva simulants by solid phase microextraction (SPME) with amino-functionalized microporous organic network (MON-NH) coated fiber. The MON-NH showed an excellent adsorption ability for phenolic compounds. The adsorption isotherm fitted the Langmuir isotherm model and the adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo second-order model. The developed SPME method exhibited wide linear ranges (0.005-500 µg/L), good linearity, low limits of quantitation (0.005 µg/L), great recoveries (87.0-112.5 %), and excellent precision (RSD < 8.3 % for intra-day and RSD < 13.7 % for inter-day). Mathematical models based on Fick's second law were applied to predict migration from pacifiers into saliva simulants and a good fit between theoretical and experimental migration results was found. The daily exposure assessment results indicated that these chemicals in pacifiers do not pose unacceptable health risks to infants. However, exposure risks still should be monitored and appropriate precautions are still needed to protect infants from exposure to these chemicals.

Saliva contact during infancy and allergy development in school-age children.

J Allergy Clin Immunol Glob

Article Synopsis
  • Parent-child saliva contact during infancy could help stimulate the immune system, potentially reducing the risk of allergies later in childhood.
  • A study involving over 3,500 Japanese school children showed that sharing eating utensils and parental pacifier sucking were linked to lower instances of eczema and allergic rhinitis.
  • The findings suggest that early saliva contact might play a protective role against certain allergies as children grow, specifically concerning eczema and allergic rhinitis.

Detection of and and Their Association with Oral Microbiome Stressors in 6-18-month-old Infants.

Universidad de Buenos Aires, Facultad de Odontología, Cátedra de Odontología Preventiva y Comunitaria, Instituto de Investigaciones en Salud Publica, Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Aim: To determine the presence of and and their association with extrinsic and intrinsic variables in 6-18-month-old infants.

Methods: This was an analytical, cross-sectional study of 65 6-18-month-old infants who visited the Centers for Early Childhood in Buenos Aires City. Three groups were established according to the presence of teeth-group I (GI)-edentulous infants, group II (GII)-infants with 1-8 teeth, and group III (GIII)-infants with 9-16 teeth.

Background: Early childhood caries poses a significant health issue in children under 6 years old. It is determined that Streptococcus mutans is a primary etiological agent, likely to be transferred through maternal contact.

Objectives: To determine the association of maternal S.

Context: Measurement of salivary glucocorticoids is an accepted method for testing adrenal function but there are few data on stability during home collection. Current salivary collection techniques require active participation or present a choking hazard and are unsuitable for young children.

Objective: We sought to compare different salivary collection methods; assess the stability of salivary glucocorticoids under conditions replicating home collection; and assess patient tolerability and caregiver acceptability of a salivary collection device for young children, a swab encased in an infant pacifier (SaliPac).
