  • This study focuses on finding effective methods to trace the geographical origin of Manila clams from Korea, North Korea, and China using novel analytical techniques.
  • Researchers combined dual-element isotopes, fatty acids, and compound-specific isotopic analysis, hypothesizing that this multi-parameter approach would enhance efficiency in categorizing unclassified samples.
  • The results showed that using fatty acid profiles and isotopic values significantly improved the accuracy of origin identification, suggesting this method could be beneficial for other seafood tracing efforts as well.

Article Abstract

While there are many studies that have reported methods for tracing the geographical origin of seafoods, most of them have focused on identifying parameters that can be used effectively and not the direct application of these methods. In this study, we attempted to differentiate the geographical origins of the Manila clam collected from different sites in Korea, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, and China using a combination of analyses based on dual-element isotopes, fatty acids (FAs), and compound-specific isotopic analysis of FAs. We hypothesized that a stepwise application of new parameters to unclassified samples could achieve this objective by integrating new information while reducing time and labor. The FA profiles and compound-specific carbon isotopic values of FAs were found to enhance the discrimination power of determining the geographic origin up to 100%. Our findings demonstrate the advantageousness of using several parameters simultaneously over the conventional method of employing individual analytical methods when identifying geographic origins of the Manila clam, which could have implications for tracing the origins of different shellfish species or other food products as well.

Background And Objectives: The built environment or physical environment consists of surroundings and conditions constructed by human activity. It includes urban design, neighborhoods, transportation, and smaller scale structures like the design and layout of rooms within buildings. The built environment can affect the physical, social, and functional wellbeing of older adults, both within their own homes and in the neighborhoods in which they live, and additionally plays a part in promoting healthy aging.

Specialized or secondary metabolites are small molecules of biological origin, often showing potent biological activities with applications in agriculture, engineering and medicine. Usually, the biosynthesis of these natural products is governed by sets of co-regulated and physically clustered genes known as biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). To share information about BGCs in a standardized and machine-readable way, the Minimum Information about a Biosynthetic Gene cluster (MIBiG) data standard and repository was initiated in 2015.

This study critically investigates the aluminium chloride-based colorimetric determination of the total flavonoid content (TFC) of honey. Following a comprehensive review of the recent literature reporting the use of the assay in the determination of TFC in honey, 10 honeys of different botanical origins were investigated using the colorimetric method alongside an artificial honey that was used as a control. Using spiking experiments, this study demonstrates that the flavonoid concentrations commonly found in honey are too low for a direct measurement and thus some of the TFC data reported in the literature might more likely be a reflection of the honey's inherent colour rather than a product of the coordination complex formed specifically between flavonoids and Al ions.

  • Myelomeningocele (MMC) primarily impacts low-resource regions, especially where there is no mandatory folic acid fortification, but research on its neurosurgical management is concentrated in high-income countries (HICs).
  • A systematic review revealed that while HICs account for a small percentage of global neural tube defect cases, they dominate both authorship and patient representation in the research literature, with minimal contributions from lower-income countries.
  • Findings suggest a significant disparity in MMC research output relative to disease burden, highlighting an urgent need for increased scholarly attention and resource allocation in lower-income countries where MMC cases are more prevalent.

This paper documents the utility of ultrasound-guided tru-cut biopsy in the diagnosis and subsequent management of a case of occult breast carcinoma presenting with multiple distant metastases in the absence of a primary breast lesion. She was initially diagnosed as primary ovarian malignancy with metastatic disease and subsequently underwent transvaginal ultrasound-guided tru-cut biopsy of the right ovarian mass. Histologic and immunohistochemical studies were consistent with a metastatic adenocarcinoma of breast origin.
