In this work, a label-free and sensitive colorimetric sensing strategy for the detection of bleomycin (BLM) was developed on the basis of BLM-mediated activation of G-quadruplex DNAzyme DNA strand scission. A G-quadruplex based hairpin probe (G4HP) containing the scission site (5'-GT-3') of BLM at the loop region and guanine (G)-rich sequences at its 5'-end was employed in this protocol. In the presence of BLM, it may cleave the 5'-GT-3' site of the hairpin probe with Fe(ii) as a cofactor, releasing the G-tetrads DNA fragment, which may further bind hemin to form a catalytic G-quadruplex-hemin DNAzyme. The resultant G-quadruplex DNAzyme has notable peroxidase-like activity, which effectively catalyzes the oxidation of 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiozoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) by HO to produce the blue-green-colored free-radical cation (ABTS). Therefore, the detection of BLM can be achieved by observing the color transition with the naked eye or measuring the absorbance at a wavelength of 420 nm using a UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Attributing to the specific BLM-induced DNA strand scission and the effective locking of G-tetrads in the stem of the G4HP, the colorimetric sensing strategy exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for detection of BLM in human serum samples, which might hold great promise for BLM assay in biomedical and clinical research.

A Cr-doped VO nanobelt (Cr/VO) with remarkable peroxidase-like activity was synthesized and coupled with uricase to catalyze the cascade reaction for  detection of uric acid. Notably, the affinity of Cr/VO for 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine dihydrochloride hydrate (TMB) and hydrogen peroxide (HO) is tenfold and 20-fold higher, respectively, than that of horseradish peroxidase (HRP). The Cr/VO exhibits highly reactive and stable peroxidase activity at temperatures of 20-60 ℃.

Endophytic fungi are non-pathogenic organisms that colonise healthy plant tissues asymptomatically. Endophytes derived from medicinal plants are sources for identifying natural products and bioactive compounds with potential uses for industry, medicine, agriculture, and related sectors. In the present study, ethyl acetate crude extracts of four endophytic fungal isolates (CALF1, CALF4, and CASF1) from the medicinal plant Plectranthus amboinicus showed potent antimicrobial activity against the test pathogenic bacteria Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Bacillus subtilis using disc diffusion assays.

In this study, we present an intelligent electromagnetic-actuated microfluidic chip integrated with a G-quadruplex DNAzyme-based biocatalysis platform for rapid and sensitive tetracycline (TC) detection. In this sensing system, TC significantly quenches fluorescent magnetic carbon dots (M-CDs) via the internal filtration effect and dynamic quenching (the excitation and emission wavelength at 350 and 440 nm, respectively). Then, the G-quadruplex on the M-CDs-Aptamer is exposed and bound with hemin to form hemin-G-quadruplex DNAzyme, catalyzing the conversion of 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine to produce blue color.
