In current-blockade impact electrochemistry, insulating particles are detected amperometrically as they impinge upon a micro- or nanoelectrode via a decrease in the faradaic current caused by a redox mediator. A limit of the method is that analytes of a given size yield a broad distribution of response amplitudes due to the inhomogeneities of the mediator flux at the electrode surface. Here, we overcome this limitation by introducing microfabricated ring-shaped electrodes with a width that is significantly smaller than the size of the target particles. We show that the relative step size is somewhat larger and exhibits a narrower distribution than at a conventional ultramicroelectrode of equal diameter.

This review will investigate the impact of electrochemical characterization method design choices on intrinsic catalyst activity measurements by predominantly using the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on supported catalysts as a model reaction. The wider use of hydrogen for transportation or electrical grid stabilization requires improvements in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) performance. One of the areas for improvement is the (ORR) catalyst efficiency and durability.

There are some electrocatalytic reactions in which the key parameter explaining their behavior is a local change in pH. Therefore, it is of utter importance to develop an electrode that could quantify this parameter in situ, but also be customizable to be used in different systems. The purpose of this work is to build a versatile rotating ring/disc electrode (RRDE) with IrOx deposited on a glass tube as a ring and any kind of material as disc.

Electrochemical techniques based on ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) play a significant role in real-time monitoring of chemical messengers' release from single cells. Conversely, precise monitoring of cells in vitro strongly depends on the adequate construction of cellular physiological microenvironment. In this paper, we developed a multilayer microdevice which integrated high aspect ratio poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) microfluidic device for long-term automated perfusion culture of cells without shear stress and an independently addressable microelectrodes array (IAMEA) for electrochemical monitoring of the cultured cells in real time.

The substrate-generation/tip-collection mode of scanning electrochemical microscopy was used to detect hydrogen peroxide formed as an intermediate during oxygen reduction at various electrodes. The experiment is conceptually similar to rotating ring-disk experiments but does not require the production of a ring-disk assembly for the specific electrode material in question. In order to limit the extension of the diffusion layer above the sample, the sample electrode potential is pulsed while the Pt ultramicroelectrode probe (UME) is held at a constant potential for oxidative amperometric detection of hydrogen peroxide.
