Tests for Igm antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc IgM) are useful diagnostic tools in the evaluation of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. A method is described for detecting anti-HBc IgM based on application of a commercially available radioimmunoassay for total anti-HBc to column separated serum IgM and the technique is evaluated in patients with acute and chronic HBV infection. Our test is both sensitive and specific for diagnosing acute hepatitis B, although duration of positivity is highly variable. This technique is simple, inexpensive, and might be particularly useful for laboratories performing limited numbers of examinations, or with limited resources. A 45 percent savings in reagent costs is realized in our laboratory.

A 75-year-old Japanese woman experienced persistent fatigue and progressive jaundice for 6 weeks, and was subsequently diagnosed with acute liver failure. She had not received any immunosuppressive therapies and/or antineoplastic chemotherapy. Blood tests revealed elevated levels of HBsAg, HBV-DNA, and anti-HBc IgG, while anti-HBc IgM was negative.

Objectives: Following the outbreak of hepatitis E in camps for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Borno State in 2017, we assessed hepatitis B, C, and E biomarkers (hepatitis B surface antigen [HBsAg], anti-HBC, anti-hepatitis E virus [HEV] immunoglobulin [Ig] G, and anti-HEV IgM) among IDPs in three camps in Borno State, Nigeria, to determine seroprevalence rates in these understudied populations.
Methods: A total of 454 IDPs, including pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers, were randomly selected, and their demographic, clinical, and epidemiological data were collected. Blood samples were tested for HBsAg and anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) using rapid tests, anti-HEV IgM, and anti-HEV IgG using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay.

Background: Viral hepatitis is a disease that is more prevalent among individuals residing in remote regions and in contexts of social vulnerability. The objective of this study was to ascertain the seroprevalence of hepatitis A (HAV), B (HBV), and C (HCV) in vulnerable communities in the rural area of São João do Piauí (SJP), northern Brazil.
Methods: Immunoenzymatic assays were employed to detect the presence of anti-HAV (total and IgM), HBsAg, anti-HBc, anti-HBs, and anti-HCV serological markers in serum samples.

Background: This study aimed to determine the prevalence and factors associated with susceptibility to hepatitis B virus (HBV) among cisgender men who have sex with men (MSM) on HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Northeastern Brazil.
Methods: This was a cross-sectional, analytical study conducted between September 2021 and June 2023. Participants underwent structured interviews to collect sociodemographic and clinical information, including hepatitis B vaccination history, HIV PrEP use and sexual health history.
