The synthesis and characterization of a novel titania/silica hybrid xerogel subsequently modified with 4-methylpyridine (4-Pic), named TiSi4PicCl is reported. The physicochemical, structural and thermal properties of TiSi4PicCl were characterized using several techniques. Anchoring cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoTsPc) in TiSi4PicCl showed greater electroanalytical sensitivity over other sensors built with these materials. A novel electroanalytical method was developed to quantify the noxious biocide pentachlorophenol (PCP) for environmental monitoring. The peak current intensity increased linearly with the analyte concentration in the range between 0.99 and 4.21 μmol L, based on the oxidation process (at + 0.81 V, vs. Ag/AgCl) of differential pulse voltammetry (DPV). The estimated limit of detection (LOD) was 29 nmol L. Recovery tests in environmental samples showed a PCP concentration of 2.05 ± 0.03 μmol L (n = 3). The method was statistically validated by comparing the PCP concentrations with those obtained by molecular absorption spectrometry and high-performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection (HPLC-DAD). At a 95% confidence level, no difference between the results was found, therefore confirming the excellent accuracy of the proposed method.

Supramolecular interactions between polymers play a crucial role in the construction of three-dimensional polymer structures with unique physical and chemical properties. In this study, we have fabricated a novel supramolecular miktoarm star copolymer (μ-star) with a cobalt(II) phthalocyanine (CoPc) core using metal-ligand coordination. Axial coordination of the terminal pyridyl group of poly(methyl methacrylate) with the CoPc core of four-armed star-shaped polystyrene provided AB- and AB-type μ-stars through stepwise complexation.

TiO-based nanocoatings exhibit great promise in practical applications owing to their superior photocatalytic property. However, because of the wide band gap of TiO, its photocatalytic capacity is only limited in the ultraviolet range. Herein, we designed and constructed robust SiO@TiO composite nanocoatings with improved transmittance and visible-light-activated photocatalytic self-cleaning properties.

Electrochemical conversion of carbon dioxide (CO) offers the opportunity to transform a greenhouse gas into valuable starting materials, chemicals, or fuels. Since many CO capture strategies employ aqueous alkaline solutions, there is interest in catalyst systems that can act directly on such capture solutions. Herein, we demonstrate new catalyst designs where the electroactive molecules readily mediate the CO-to-CO conversion in aqueous solutions between pH 4.

2D to 3D Reconstruction of Boron-Linked Covalent-Organic Frameworks.

The transformation of two-dimensional (2D) covalent-organic frameworks (COFs) into three-dimensions (3D) is synthetically challenging, and it is typically addressed through interlayer cross-linking of alkene or alkyne bonds. Here, we report the first example of the chemical reconstruction of a 2D COF to a 3D COF with a complete lattice rearrangement facilitated by base-triggered boron hybridization. This chemical reconstruction involves the conversion of trigonal boronate ester linkages to tetrahedral anionic spiroborate linkages.

Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a progressive metabolic disease associated with high blood sugar levels that affects 537 million people worldwide. This study aim is to investigate the potential for use in the treatment of T2DM by examining the in vitro glucosidase inhibitory effects of novel synthesized metallophthalocyanines. For this reason, we have synthesized cobalt(II), copper(II) phthalocyanines (3PY-ON-CoQ, 3PY-ON-CuQ) that are both water-soluble and do not aggregate in water.
