In this computational survey, substituent effects of group 17 on the stability (singlet-triplet energy gaps, ΔE) and reactivity of singlet (s) and triplet (t) forms of 2-germabicyclo[1.1.1.]pentane-2-ylidenes are considered by using B3LYP/6-311 + + G**, B3LYP/aug-cc-pvtz, and B3LYP/def2-TZVP level of theories. In all germylene structures, singlets appear more stable than their corresponding triplet congeners, revealing a singlet ground state and the order of stability appears to be 1,3,4,4,5,5-hexachloro-2-germabicyclo[1.1.1.]pentane-2-ylidenes (3) > 1,3,4,4,5,5-hexabromo-2-germabicyclo[1.1.1.]pentane-2-ylidenes (4) > 1,3,4,4,5,5-hexafluoro-2-germabicyclo[1.1.1.]pentane-2-ylidenes (2) > 1,3,4,4,5,5-hexaiodo-2-germabicyclo[1.1.1.]pentane-2-ylidenes (5) > 2-germabicyclo[1.1.1.]pentane-2-ylidenes (1), at the three levels of theory. The positive and negative effects on germylene stability are LP → LP and σ → σ interactions, respectively. The results of our calculations show that every singlet germylene with high LP → LP interactions has higher electrophilicity. Also, in going from the most electronegative F to the least electronegative I, the nucleophilicity index (N) for germylene increases. Finally, this survey introduces that germylene 4 with rather high band gap (ΔE = 97.19 kcal/mol), nucleophilicity (2.20 eV), and stability (ΔE = 76.95 kcal/mol) has high proton affinity (171.55 kcal/mol) that can be applied as multidentate ligands and it is hoped that this will prompt experimental attention toward its.

The formation of isolable monatomic Bi complexes and Bi radical species is challenging due to the pronounced reducing nature of metallic bismuth. Here, we report a convenient strategy to tame Bi and Bi atoms by taking advantage of the redox noninnocent character of a new chelating bis(germylene) ligand. The remarkably stable novel Bi cation complex , supported by the new bis(iminophosphonamido-germylene)xanthene ligand [(P)Ge(Xant)Ge(P)] , [(P)Ge(Xant)Ge(P) = PhP(NBu)Ge(Xant)Ge(NBu)PPh, Xant = 9,9-dimethyl-xanthene-4,5-diyl], was synthesized by a two-electron reduction of the cationic BiI precursor complex with cobaltocene (CpCo) in a molar ratio of 1:2.

Tetranuclear cores (M-E) of transition metals (M) and tetrylenes (E=Si, Ge, Sn) are key motifs in homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis. They exhibit a continuum of M-M and E-E bonding within the inorganic core that leads to a variety of structures for which there are no specific synthetic methods. Herein, we report a series of highly reduced [NiGe] squares solely stabilized by bulky terphenyl (CH-2,6-Ar) ligands, for which we provide complementary and high-yielding syntheses.

An open-shell germylene stabilized by a phenalenyl-based bidentate ligand was synthesized and characterized. Because of the high thermal stability originating from spin delocalization over the phenalenyl moiety, it was possible to isolate compound in crystalline form by sublimation at ca. 300 °C.

Time-resolved studies of germylene, GeH , generated by laser flash photolysis of 3,4-dimethyl-1-germacyclopent-3-ene at 193 nm and monitored by laser absorption, have been carried out to obtain rate constants for its bimolecular reaction with HCl. The reaction was studied in the gas phase, mainly at a total pressure of 10 Torr (in SF bath gas) at five temperatures in the range 295-558 K. Experiments at other pressures showed that these rate constants were unaffected by pressure.

We report herein the synthesis of a stable plumbylone (3) by reduction of a bromodigermylplumbylene (2) with 2.2 equiv of potassium graphite (KC ). The molecular structure of 3 was established by a single-crystal X-ray diffraction study and features a two-coordinated Pb center with an acute Ge-Pb-Ge bond angle.
