A new spirostanol steroid, aspidiata A (), and a new spirostanol steroidal saponin, aspidiata B (), along with three known compounds, paris saponin VII (), daucosterol (), and (25)-spirostane-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexol (), were isolated from whole plants of collected in Vietnam. Their chemical structures were established by spectroscopic analysis and comparison with previously published data. Compound showed strong cytotoxicity against LU-1, Hep-G2, MCF-7, and KB human cancer cell lines with half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC) values ranging from 0.57 to 1.23 µM. Compound exhibited weak cytotoxic activity against the LU-1 cell line, with an IC value of 95.81 µM.

Decades of research on the infamous antinutritional steroidal glycoalkaloids (SGAs) in Solanaceae plants have provided deep insights into their metabolism and roles. However, engineering SGAs in heterologous hosts has remained a challenge. We discovered that a protein evolved from the machinery involved in building plant cell walls is the crucial link in the biosynthesis of SGAs.

The commencement of kidney stone formation involves a crucial initial phase characterized by injury to renal tubular cells caused by calcium oxalate (CaOx). Dioscin (Dio) has been acknowledged for its potent anti-inflammation and anti-apoptotic properties; nevertheless, the impact and underlying Investigation into the molecular basis underlying the action of Dioscin in mitigating inflammation and apoptotic induced by exposure to calcium oxalate crystals in renal tissues remain unexplored. To comprehend the precise mechanism of Dioscin in the treatment of crystalline nephropathy, we conducted experiments utilizing a murine model of CaOx crystal deposition, induced by intraperitoneal administration of glyoxylate.

Diosgenin Mediated JAK/STAT Signal Channel Improving SD Rat Renal Ischemia-Reperfusion.

Transplant Proc

December 2024

Jiangxi Provincial People's Hospital, The First Affiliated Hospital of Nanchang Medical College, Organ Transplantation Department, Nanchang, China. Electronic address:

Objective: To explore the mechanism of action of diosgenin and JAK/STAT in SD rat renal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury.

Method: A renal I/R injury model was established, rat was divided into four groups: control group, sham surgery group, I/R model group, and diosgenin pretreatment group. 48 hours after the completion of modeling, blood was collected for testing of SCr, BUN, and Kim-1.

Diosgenin is a phytosteroid sapogenin with reported antitumoral activity. Despite the evidence indicating a lower incidence of prostate cancer (PCa) associated with a higher consumption of phytosteroids and the beneficial role of these compounds, only a few studies have investigated the effects of diosgenin in PCa, and its mechanisms of action remain to be disclosed. The present study investigated the effect of diosgenin in modulating PCa cell fate and glycolytic metabolism and explored its potential interplay with G protein-coupled oestrogen receptor (GPER).
