Surface disinfection currently plays a decisive role in the epidemiological situation caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. However, most disinfection products available on the market have a high evaporation rate and only an immediate action and not continuous, creating the need for a high frequency of disinfection. To overcome this limitation, in the present work, poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microcapsules were developed with an active agent (hydrogen peroxide) encapsulated, which has the ability to inactivate/neutralize the SARS-CoV-2 virus. PMMA-HO microcapsules have a spherical shape and a smooth structure with low porosity and were successfully attached to nonwoven fabrics, as observed from scanning electron microscopy. The thermogravimetric analysis shows that PMMA-HO microcapsules have high thermal stability and can increase the stability of HO. Nonfabric substrates functionalized with PMMA-HO microcapsules were tested by a highly sensitive and specific reverse transcription-quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR)-based method to evaluate antiviral activity through the degradation of SARS-CoV-2 deoxyribonucleic acids. The highest percentage of viral nucleic acid elimination was obtained when exposing the viral sample for 1 h to PMMA-HO microcapsules, resulting in an elimination of >97% of the coronavirus. In addition, the microcapsules are stable over a period of three weeks and retain the ability to eliminate SARS-CoV-2. Hence, it is demonstrated that this microcapsule system is efficient for SARS-CoV-2 elimination and inherent surface disinfection.

Purpose: This work described a new species of Ceratomyxa, based on morphological and phylogenetic analyzes of myxospores collected from the gallbladder of the fish Astyanax mexicanus.
Methods: Sixty-two specimens were captured, between December 2022 and February 2024, in the Flexal River, in the community of Tessalônica, state of Amapá. The specimens were transported alive to the Laboratory of Morphophysiology and Animal Health, at the State University of Amapá, where the studies were carried out.

Passive radiative cooling has recently gained significant attention as a highly promising technology that offers a zero-energy and electricity-free solution to tackle the pressing issue of global warming. Nevertheless, research efforts have predominantly focused on enhancing daytime and hot-day radiative cooling efficacy, often neglecting the potential downsides associated with excessive cooling and the consequent increased heating expenses during cold nights and winter days. Herein, we demonstrate a micro-nanostructured engineered composite film that synergistically integrates room-temperature adaptive silica-shell/oil-core phase change microcapsules (S-PCMs) with commercially available cellulose fibers.

Objectives: Faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) is an established treatment for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (R-CDI). This study aimed to identify calprotectin and microbiome characteristics as potential biomarkers of FMT success.
Methods: We conducted a prospective study of patients who underwent oral FMT (single dose of 4-5 capsules) for R-CDI (January 2018 to December 2022).

In this study, composite films were developed by encapsulating cassia oil (CO) with β-cyclodextrin through a microencapsulation technique and incorporating it into a chitosan (CS), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and glycerol matrix. The primary objective of the film was to inhibit bacterial growth on the surface of fresh bananas and extend their shelf life. Characterization methods were employed to evaluate the physical properties and functionality of the composite films.

Due to health reasons of polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR), there has been a growing interest in reducing it. To address this, this study developed the PGPR/Protein (whey, pea, and chickpea protein isolates) emulsifier combinations. The effects of these combinations on the preparation, structure, physicochemical and in vitro digestive properties of W/O/W microcapsules were evaluated.
