Background And Aims: Observational epidemiological studies have suggested that atopic dermatitis (AD) was associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). However, causality remains to be established. In the present study, Mendelian randomization (MR) analyses were used to evaluate whether AD and CVDs are causally associated.
Methods: This study was based on summary statistics of genome-wide association studies (GWASs) for a set of cardiovascular outcomes including heart failure (HF), coronary artery disease (CAD), myocardial infarction (MI), atrial fibrillation (AF), stroke, and stroke subtypes. A total of 19 independent single nucleotide polymorphisms associated with AD were identified at a genome-wide significance threshold ( < 5 × 10) based on a large GWAS meta-analysis. MR estimates were pooled using the inverse variance weighted method. Complementary analyses further evaluated the robustness of the results.
Results: Genetically determined AD was causally associated with HF [odds ratio (OR), 1.07; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.03-1.10; = 1.11 × 10]. However, there was no causal association between AD and the risk of AF, CAD, MI, stroke, and stroke subtypes. Complementary analyses returned similar results. No horizontal pleiotropy was found.
Conclusion: This MR study provided evidence to support that AD exerted an effect contributing to HF. No significant associations were found for other cardiovascular outcomes. The study suggested that prevention and early diagnosis of AD may help prevent HF. Improved awareness of these associations is warranted for better management of CVDs in the future.

Background: Contemporary surgical approaches for aortic valve replacement (AVR) include full median sternotomy, hemi-sternotomy, and a right anterior mini thoracotomy (RAMT) approach. We report the midterm outcomes of RAMT for isolated AVR.
Methods: A retrospective study was conducted, reporting the midterm outcomes of patients who underwent isolated RAMT AVR.

Background: Myocardial infarction with no obstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA), and ischemia with no obstructive coronary arteries (INOCA), are female-predominant conditions; clinical trials are lacking to guide medical management for the common underlying vasomotor etiologies. Data on long-term outcomes of (M)INOCA patients following attendance at a women's heart centre (WHC) are lacking.
Methods: Women diagnosed with MINOCA (n = 51) or INOCA (n = 112) were prospectively followed for 3 years at the Leslie Diamond WHC (LDWHC) in Vancouver.

Exercise has a significant impact on the cardiovascular (CV) health of children and adolescents, with resultant alterations in CV structure and function being evident, even at an early age. Engagement in regular, moderate physical activity (PA) is associated with long-term CV health benefits and a reduced risk of CV disease and mortality later in life. However, competitive sports often involve PA training intensities that are beyond recommended levels for young athletes, potentially leading to adverse CV outcomes.

Background: The aim of this study was to assess the impact of panvascular disease (PVD) on quality of life (QOL), exercise capacity, and clinical outcomes, in patients with heart failure (HF) with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
Methods: We performed a post hoc analysis of the Heart Failure: A Controlled Trial Investigating Outcomes of Exercise Training (HF-ACTION; NCT00047437). Patients with PVD were defined as those having coronary heart disease, stroke, or peripheral vascular disease at baseline.

Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common cardiac arrhythmia. Given its often-paroxysmal nature, screening at a single time point, using a 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) or a Holter monitor, has limited benefit. The AliveCor KardiaMobile device is a validated ECG recorder that can be used for patient-directed arrhythmia diagnosis and symptom-rhythm correlation.
