Bacteremia due to Parabacteroides distasonis: Experience with 4 cases.

Anaerobe

Department of Microbiology and Instituto de Investigación Biosanitaria Ibs.GRANADA, University Hospital Virgen de las Nieves, Granada, Spain.

Published: August 2022

Objective: To report a series of four uncommon cases of bacteremia due to Parabacteroides distasonis.

Methods: We have analyzed the epidemiological characteristics, clinical features, diagnostic methods, treatment and outcome of these patients.

Results: Two sets of blood cultures of each patient yielded a pure culture of an anaerobic microorganism identified as P. distasonis by MALDI-TOF MS, and confirmed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. All patients were male and they had risk factors for anaerobic bacteremia. All isolates were susceptible to metronidazole and the outcome was successful in three patients.

Conclusions: Bloodstream infections due to P. distasonis are still rare. MALDI-TOF MS appear to be an excellent tool for the correct identification.

Article Synopsis
  • A type of bacteria was found in sick people with stomach issues and is mostly safe as a probiotic, but it can cause serious infections in very rare cases.
  • A 31-year-old woman got really sick after childbirth because of this bacteria, leading to severe complications and requiring special treatment.
  • The study aims to help doctors, especially those dealing with pregnancies, know more about this bacteria to spot and treat infections quickly.

We present the case of a male with end-stage diabetic nephropathy on haemodialysis who initially presented with acute-on-chronic digital ulceration. While awaiting vascular intervention, he became septic with abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Flexible sigmoidoscopy confirmed pseudomembranous colitis secondary to Clostridium difficile.

Background: Despite preventive measures, infections continue to pose significant risks to pediatric allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (allo-HCT) recipients. The gut microbiota has been linked to clinical outcomes following adult allo-HCT. This study evaluated whether similar disruptions or differing microbiota patterns were associated with infection risk in pediatric allo-HCT.

Incidence and Clinical Characteristics of Anaerobic Bacteremia at a University Hospital in Hungary: A 5-Year Retrospective Observational Study.

Antibiotics (Basel)

September 2022

Department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology, Clinical Centre, Medical School, University of Pécs, Szigeti út 12, 7624 Pécs, Hungary.

Strict anaerobes have been reported to account for 0.5-13% of episodes of bacteremia in the adult population, with a growing awareness among clinicians regarding anaerobic bacteremia, especially in patients with specific predisposing factors. The aim of our present study was to assess the incidence and clinical characteristics of anaerobic bacteremia during a 5-year period (2016-2020) at a tertiary care teaching hospital, and to compare our findings with other studies in Hungary.
