We have prepared a hetero-tetrametallic assembly consisting of three ytterbium ions coordinated to a central [Ru(bpm)] (bpm = 2,2'-bipyrimidine) motif. Irradiation into the absorption band of the peripheral ytterbium ions at 980 nm engenders emission of the MLCT state of the central [Ru(bpm)] core at 636 nm, which represents the first example of f → d molecular upconversion (UC). Time-resolved measurements reveal a slow rise of the UC emission, which was modeled with a mathematical treatment of the observed kinetics according to a cooperative photosensitization mechanism using a virtual Yb centered doubly excited state followed by energy transfer to the Ru centered MLCT state.

Drug repurposing refers to excavating clinically approved drugs for new clinical indications, effectively shortening the cost and time of clinical evaluation due to the established molecular structure, pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics. In this sense, clinically approved Prussian blue (PB) has received considerable attention, by virtue of its unique optical, magnetic, and enzymatic performance. Nevertheless, the clinical transformation of PB-based nanodrugs remains restricted owing to their complex synthetic formulation and constrained therapeutic performance.

Femtosecond laser inscription in a ytterbium-doped silver-containing phosphate glass is demonstrated by achieving 3D highly localized laser-induced silver photochemistry. The produced fluorescent silver nanoclusters lead to high optical contrast in the visible range, showing that the coinsertion of Yb ions is not detrimental to the silver-based photochemistry. We demonstrate efficient energy transfer from these silver nanoclusters to the rare-earth Yb ions, leading to near-IR background-free fluorescence emission.

Methods: ES (n = 10) and ESF (n = 10) forms were tested for their bioactivity. Elemental analysis was done on the fresh material and material immersed in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) for 30 days.

Strongly coupled interfaces in the epitaxial growth heteronanocrystals (HNCs) provide advanced functionalities regarding interface connection, electron transfer, and carrier separation. However, the majority of current nanocomposites primarily focus on a single heterojunction involving only two subunits, which hinders the achievement of optimized synergy energy transfer among more than two components. Herein, ternary NaGdF:Yb,Tm-TiO:F-FeO HNCs with dual-heterojunction were synthesized based on the crystal plane epitaxial growth strategy for boosting near-infrared (NIR)-triggered photo-chemodynamic therapy (PCDT).
