The health effects of exposure to secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) are still limited. Here, we investigated and compared the toxicities of soot particles (SP) coated with β-pinene SOA (SOA-SP) and SP coated with naphthalene SOA (SOA-SP) in a human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B) residing at the air-liquid interface. SOA-SP mostly contained oxygenated aliphatic compounds from β-pinene photooxidation, whereas SOA-SP contained a significant fraction of oxygenated aromatic products under similar conditions. Following exposure, genome-wide transcriptome responses showed an Nrf2 oxidative stress response, particularly for SOA-SP. Other signaling pathways, such as redox signaling, inflammatory signaling, and the involvement of matrix metalloproteinase, were identified to have a stronger impact following exposure to SOA-SP. SOA-SP also induced a stronger genotoxicity response than that of SOA-SP. This study elucidated the mechanisms that govern SOA toxicity and showed that, compared to SOAs derived from a typical biogenic precursor, SOAs from a typical anthropogenic precursor have higher toxicological potency, which was accompanied with the activation of varied cellular mechanisms, such as aryl hydrocarbon receptor. This can be attributed to the difference in chemical composition; specifically, the aromatic compounds in the naphthalene-derived SOA had higher cytotoxic potential than that of the β-pinene-derived SOA.

We elucidated the changes of soil microbial biomass and community structure in soil profiles under four typical land use types (farmland, grassland, secondary forest and plantation)and across five soil layers (0-10, 10-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50 cm) in the northern mountainous region of Hebei Province. We measured soil microbial biomass by phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) method, and investigated the effects of land use and soil depth on soil microbial biomass and community structure by variance analysis, correlation analysis and redundancy analysis. The results showed that soil water content, bulk density, and organic carbon content of farmland differed significantly from other land use types.

The high abundance of acetone ((CH)C═O), which makes it a good candidate for oxygenated molecules, and the high reactivity of oxygen atoms in the first excited state O(D) are two well-known facts in the chemistry of the atmosphere. In this research, we prove that the singlet oxygen and acetone system is capable of proceeding through multiwell multipath reactions, leading to the production of several organic aerosols. Hence, the nature of species released by the (CH)C═O + O(D) reaction to air can be clarified by profound attention to the possible routes.

Detailed DFT studies of H and C NMR chemical shifts of hydroxy secondary oxidation products of various geometric isomers of conjugated linolenic acids methyl esters are presented. Several low energy conformers were identified for model compounds of the central dienenol OH moiety, which were found to be practically independent on the various functionals and basis sets used. This greatly facilitated the minimization process of the geometric isomers of conjugated linolenic acids methyl esters.
