Introduction: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a non-degenerative syndrome characterized by generalized, chronic musculoskeletal pain, as well as mood, memory and sleep disorders.

Objective: To search for serum anti-neural antibodies (ANeuA) in patients with FM (FMP) in order to rule out autoimmune etiology.

Methods: The Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and Beck's depression inventory (BDI) were applied. Immunoreactivity and the target recognized on the sera from FMPs and healthy subjects were analyzed by indirect immunofluorescence and Western blot.

Results: Both FIQ and BDI values were significantly altered in FMPs in comparison with those of controls (FIQ, 70 ± 25 vs. 12 ± 12, p < 0.0001; BDI, 17 ± 11 vs. 4 ± 3, p < 0.0002). Only five out of 15 FMP sera had ANeuA specifically directed against neurons from the medial vestibular nucleus of the brainstem. This immunoreactivity was not detected in the sera from the 14 controls. ANeuA recognized a 45 kDa protein.

Conclusions: 30% of FMPs have ANeuA that have not been described before. In future studies, it will be necessary for anti-neural immunoreactivity to be determined in a larger sample and for the role of ANeuAs in the pathophysiology of FM to be established.

Article Synopsis
  • Herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE) can lead to serious neurological issues, and recent studies suggest the immune response in the central nervous system may play a key role in its development.
  • A study involving 176 patients suspected of having viral meningitis or encephalitis found a significant increase in the IgG index in patients who tested positive for herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) after they cleared the virus.
  • The findings indicate that elevated IgG levels can occur even after the virus is gone, suggesting an immune response that doesn't rely on antibodies, which could have implications for understanding HSE's effects on the brain.

Autoimmune encephalitis encompasses a spectrum of neurological disorders characterized by an autoimmune response directed against neurons and glia. Around two-thirds of cases exhibit autoantibodies targeting neuronal or glial antigens in the cerebrospinal fluid and/or serum. The diagnosis is based on specific criteria combining a subacute clinical presentation and complementary test results.

Unlabelled: Radiotherapy (RT) plays a key role in brain tumours but can negatively impact functional outcomes and quality of life. The aim of this study was to analyse anti-neural and onconeural autoantibodies and markers of blood-brain barrier (BBB) disruption in patients with primary brain cancer undergoing RT.

Materials And Methods: A prospective study was conducted on 45 patients with a brain tumour scheduled for intensity-modulated radiotherapy.

Background: The anti-SOX-1 antibodies have been mainly associated with Lambert-Eaton Myasthenic Syndrome (LETMS) and Small-Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC). In this report, we describe the interesting case of a patient with serum anti-SOX-1 antibodies and Crohn's Disease (CD) with ensuing neurological symptoms.

Case Presentation: A Caucasian 67-year-old female was admitted to the Emergency Department with seizures, vertigo, emesis, nausea, postural instability and recurrent falls, over a period of 10 days.
