This innovative teaching strategy sought to evaluate authentic literature as the primary textbook in a nursing theory course. Arts-based pedagogy can potentiate students' development of critical thinking skills, which are necessary for sound clinical judgment. At the end of the course, students responded to an online survey to better understand their experience of using authentic literature in nursing. Students reported a high level of agreement on the interconnectedness of themes in the authentic literature with the course purpose and content. Authentic literature provided a contextual perspective for analysis, debate, and formation of clinical nursing judgment.

Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) has a variety of potential applications in health professions education and assessment; however, measurable educational impacts of AI-based educational strategies on learning outcomes have not been systematically evaluated.

Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using electronic databases (CINAHL Plus, EMBASE, Proquest, Pubmed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) to identify studies published until October 1st 2024, analyzing the impact of AI-based tools/interventions in health profession assessment and/or training on educational outcomes. The present analysis follows the PRISMA 2020 statement for systematic reviews and the structured approach to reporting in health care education for evidence synthesis.

Optimal frequency bands for pupillography for maximal correlation with HRV.

Sci Rep

January 2025

Centre for Informatics and Systems of the University of Coimbra, Department of Informatics Engineering, University of Coimbra, Coimbra, Portugal.

Assessing cognitive load using pupillography frequency features presents a persistent challenge due to the lack of consensus on optimal frequency limits. This study aims to address this challenge by exploring pupillography frequency bands and seeking clarity in defining the most effective ranges for cognitive load assessment. From a controlled experiment involving 21 programmers performing software bug inspection, our study pinpoints the optimal low-frequency (0.

Challenges in Synthesizing Hexagonal Boron Nitride "Quantum" Dots.

Nano Lett

January 2025

School of Physics, Xidian University, No. 2 Taibai South Road, Xi'an 710071, China.

Fluorescent nanodots derived from hexagonal boron nitride (-BN) have garnered significant attention over the past decade. As a result, various synthesis methods─encompassing both bottom-up hydrothermal reactions and top-down exfoliation processes─have been deemed "successful" in producing BN nanodots. Nevertheless, this Perspective emphasizes that substantial challenges remain in the synthesis of "true" nanodots composed mainly of -BN units, as many so-called successful syntheses reported in the literature involve some mischaracterizations.

Generative artificial intelligence in graduate medical education.

Front Med (Lausanne)

January 2025

Clinical Informatics Fellowship Program, Baylor Scott & White Health, Round Rock, TX, United States.

Generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is rapidly transforming various sectors, including healthcare and education. This paper explores the potential opportunities and risks of GenAI in graduate medical education (GME). We review the existing literature and provide commentary on how GenAI could impact GME, including five key areas of opportunity: electronic health record (EHR) workload reduction, clinical simulation, individualized education, research and analytics support, and clinical decision support.
